Matador trio to play collegiate football

Those long hours practicing in the sweltering Texas heat paid big dividends for three Seguin High School football players on Wednesday, as each signed letters of intent during a special National Signing Day ceremony at Goldie Harris Gym. Comments (0)

KUHN: With elite recruits in hand, Strong now needs to win
Posted: February 04, 2016

National Signing Day 2016 seemed to be a great one for Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns. Strong was able to transform a recruiting class ranked about 32nd nationally to about the 11th ranked class in a single day. Strong landed seven quality football recruits, with four players being highly-recruited defensive tackles.

FOWLER: License plate recognition gives police another tool
Posted: January 31, 2016

It can happen to anyone. You’re a good driver. You have a clean record. Yet the one time you creep up over the speed limit or roll through a stop sign, the blue and reds come on. You’ve gotten yourself a ticket.

KUHN:Slowly and steadily, our city progresses

Out with the old and in with the new, or so the saying goes, and in Seguin the old H-E-B is going — down, that is.

DUFRESNE: President Sanders? It’s now a possibility
Posted: February 05, 2016

President Bernie Sanders looks more possible than ever now that he had virtually tied Hillary Clinton in Iowa. His supporters and those of Ted Cruz and Donald Trump have one thing in common, they’re disgusted with the way things work in Washington. They all think lobbyists and big money have too much influence over our lives.

LEONE: Blame crony-capitalism for economy’s struggles
Posted: February 05, 2016

One of the most common myths I regularly hear is the accusation that capitalism has been the downfall of the nation and economy. Most people are aware that Libertarians have a very capitalistic stance on economics and emphasize the need for a free market. The thing is, as Ron Paul has repeated for years, we haven’t had capitalism. It’s one of the most bitter ironies when a Sanders supporter raves about the evil capitalistic corporations being responsible for our economic problems, only to reason with conservatives that, “we already have socialism.” But they are correct. Social Security, income tax brackets, welfare and so many government institutions are inherently socialist in their nature.

ROUX: Baklava more than just a recipe

The Baklava was a big hit, and if I do say so myself, I got it close to right this time. I’ve only been practicing for 45 years.

Endorsing Reyes for judge
Posted: January 31, 2016

I have been active in conservative politics in Guadalupe County for many years. Over the years, I’ve met many politicians, most of whom honestly want to serve, but few of whom possess the qualities that make them truly outstanding candidates.

Paying it forward
Posted: January 24, 2016

Nine ladies from our Beta Sigma Phi chapter were having dinner at Garcia’s Tuesday evening. Our waitress came to our table and told us our meals were paid for by this kind gentleman who was also dining there. We were so surprised. So “many thanks” to you, if by chance you are reading this. What a generous man! All of us decided to go out and pay it forward to someone else.
