Sunday morning wreck

A Jeep Wrangler is destroyed after colliding head-on with a Chevrolet 2500 pickup pulling a trailer early morning on Sunday, June 30, 2019 on FM 78 west of Marion.

Two people were killed and a third injured in a head-on collision early Sunday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the wreck about 2 a.m. on FM 78 2.3 miles east of Cibolo, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Deon Cockrell said.

The wreck happened when a 2005 Jeep Wrangler traveling east on FM 78 crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 pickup towing a flatbed trailer that was traveling west, Cockrell said.

“For unknown reasons, the Jeep traveled on to the wrong side of the roadway in a no passing zone,” he said. “The Jeep struck the front left of the Chevrolet and trailer before rolling over and ejecting the driver.”

The driver of the sports utility vehicle, later identified as Richard Bennet, 44, of Seguin, and the driver of the truck, identified as Michael Taylor, 21, of Cibolo, were both pronounced dead at the scene, Cockrell said.

A female passenger in the pickup was injured and taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment.

Her condition was unknown as of press time.

The cause of the wreck is being investigated.

I am so saddened by this as RIck was friend and a true Airman! Rest in Peace to the victims and prayers for the families.

My condolences to Michaels family & his fiancé Kaylyn who was injured & her family. 🙏🏼 This is just absolutely heartbreaking 😔💔

As the aunt of the deceased driver of the truck, I am hopeful that the US Air Force will also conduct a full investigation into the "unknown reason" that the airman traveled onto the wrong side of the road way. This was a needless death of a brilliant young man that was unfortunately witnessed by his family that was following him in separate vehicles. No family should have to witness such a horrific event, especially of their child. No words can express the pain our family is feeling at this time.

My heart is absolutely broken for Michael and his family. That green race car that Michael owned, it use to be my brother’s car, who passed away at the race track two years ago. Michael was like my new brother when he was behind the wheel of that race car. Now I just lost my second brother all over again. I love his family and this is tragic!!!

Richard Bennet was my dad, he was a good man, and seeing people be so ugly toward him hurts. I know him, and I know he wouldn’t have done any of this on purpose. He was always a safe person, when I found out about this a little bit of me died inside. I had just talked to him not even two days before this happened. I miss my dad.

michael was my brother and my best friend. he was only 21 and just became an uncle and was meant to be getting married .. it hurts my heart that’s he’s gone and i miss him.. he was killed because of a reckless driver . i love michael. and for kaylyn i’m so happy she alive.. but i wish i still had my best friend too. he was hero .. he saved kaylyn’s life .. we love and miss you so much bubba .❤️
