GSA to cut support for scout house

Posted: Friday, August 30, 2013 12:00 am | Updated: 5:12 pm, Sat Aug 31, 2013.

SEGUIN — The Girl Scouts’ Southwest Council is pulling the financial plug on the Seguin Girl Scout House, but the doors won’t be completely closed.

Recently the council unveiled its long-range property plan, which included closing three scout houses — Seguin, New Braunfels and Del Rio.

Girl Scouts is an important part of a girls life. Perhaps the community can come together to support them?

How is this not meeting the needs of the members:
“On a regular basis we have troop meetings two or three times a week at the scout house,” she said."

"We kind of saw it coming, especially after the transfer of the council and the realignment, we just didn’t know when.”

This is concerning: More and more Girl Scout councils across the USA are focusing on Urban areas and leaving girl members in small communities or rural areas without the properties their communities supported with the purchase of cookies or other donations, through the years before the mega-mergers that created regional councils.

This is a BIG difference: "the Southwest Council will no longer be responsible for the financial aspects of the building".... or on the scout houses in New Braunfels and Del Rio.

This council also recently vacated these 3 other properties.
    • Carrizo Springs Girl Scout House
    • Uvalde Girl Scout House
    • Eagle Pass Girl Scout Educational Center

Where is the cookie money going? To build a shop for the girls to buy things and warehouse space for cookie deliveries?

Oh, probably to pay the for the lease on the school building for the lucky Urban Girl Scouts or Gamma Sigma Girls® living on the west side of San Antonio.

"Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas was established in 2007 from the San Antonio Area council plus a large section of the old El Camino council." Including these 21 counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, Maverick, Medina, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, Wilson, and Zavala counties.

I can completely understand the need to cut costs, but having a location to meet is getting harder to find. Councils should be bending over backwards to help troops with locations.

On a side note, it would be nice if reporters would verify their information prior to publishing. Girl Scouts is abbreviated GSUSA as we are Girl Scouts of the USA.
