Community Calendar for March 10, 2010
ONGOING
CARSON RECEPTION — A farewell reception for Coach Jim Carson of SISD will be held March 10 at the Staff Development Room of Oak Park Mall, 1221 E. Kingsbury St. from 4-6 p.m. The Seguin Sports Booster Club invites the public to join in wishing Coach Carson well.
BOOK CLUB — The Marion Community Library Book Club meets the second Wednesday of the month. This month’s meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 at the Marion Community Library.
RELAY MEETING — A Relay For Life team captains meeting will be held Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church. If you have established a team or wish to do so please plan to attend. If you have any questions, please contact Donna Castillo at 830-305-1539.
KIDS DISCOVER — School-age children are invited to the Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library for a fun and educational program on volcanoes. The program will take place on Thursday, March 11 at 4 p.m. Wear old clothes, as there will be eruptions. The event is free and open to the public. The library is located at 707 E. BAND BOOSTERS — The Seguin Band Boosters will have a meeting on Thursday March 11 at 7 p.m. It will take place in the high school band hall. All members are encouraged to attend.
BOOK SALE — Guadalupe Regional Medical Center Volunteers will sponsor a “Books are Fun” sale, Thursday, March 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday, March 12 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The sale will be held on the third floor of the Patient Tower which is the new-three story tower on the west side of the hospital. Cash, checks or credit cards are accepted and the public is invited.
NARFE MEETING — The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) Chapter 1336 will be held at Christina’s Mexican Restaurant, 707 E. Kingsbury St. on Thursday, March 11. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner followed by chapter business at 7 p.m.
CASINO NIGHT — A Pot O’ Gold Casino Night will be held on Friday, March 12 from 6-8 p.m. at Argent Court Assisted Living, 953 S. Highway 123 Bypass. The event will include slot machines, card games and dominos. Refreshments will be provided. RSVP by calling Carrie or Cindy at 830-372-1177.
LINCOLN BALL — Lincoln Ball High School Alumni/Ex-students Association will meet March 13 at 12:30 p.m. at River Terrace Apartments on King Street in the activity room. The group is getting ready for the 2010 reunion.
CASINO NIGHT — A casino night Relay for Life fundraiser for Team Pink will be held on March 12 at the Weinert House. The event begins at 6 p.m. and features live and silent auctions, a 42 tournament and poker tournament, black jack, snacks, a raffle and live music from Big Daddy Dean. Tickets are $15.
SRT MEETING — The Seguin Sons of the Republic of Texas will meet at a new date, the second Sunday of each month. The next meeting will be Saturday, March 13 at 12:30 p.m. at El Ranchito Restaurant, 983 N. State Highway 123 Bypass. The group is up to 28 potential members and five confirmed.
DOG WALK — The Seguin Activity Center invites the community to a fundraiser from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 at the pecan bottom of Starcke Park. Local canines are invited to compete in contests including longest tail or shortest legs; meet pets up for adoption, participate in a raffle and more. AMERICAN LEGION — The American Legion Post 245, located at 618 E. Kingsbury St., Seguin will celebrate the American Legion’s 91st Birthday on Saturday, March 13, 2010 starting at 5 p.m. A barbecue sausage dinner will be served by Johnny’s barbecue at 6 p.m. followed by Continuous Membership Awards and the Legionnaire and Auxiliary Members of the Year awards. VOCALISTA CONTEST — Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will host the 25th Annual Noche De Gala Competencia de Vocalistas. It will be held on Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at Jackson Auditorium located on the Texas Lutheran University campus.
COUNTRY DANCE — The Texas Weather Band will be playing classic old-time country music at the Geronimo VFW 8456 Hall, Saturday night, March 13, 8 p.m. to midnight. A $7 donation is requested. BARBECUE CHICKEN — The Knights of Columbus Council 3412 will sell barbecue chicken after all Sunday masses at Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. James Catholic Churches on Sunday, March 14. Chicken will also be available at the pits behind the K.C. Hall from 7 a.m. to noon. The price is $5 for a whole chicken.
HERMANN SONS — Laubach Hermann Sons Lodge No. 244-2 will hold a regular quarterly meeting on Sunday, March 14 at the Dixie Grille Restaurant at 12:30 p.m. All members and guests are invited to attend. Please note time change. For information call Marilyn at 830-660-0004.
SPRING BREAK — A Spring Break Day Camp at the Seguin Activity Center will be held March 15-19. The fee is $55 per camper (trips included) or $15 a day. With no trips included, the cost is $45 per camper or $10 a day. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 3-15. Camp times are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and final pickup time is 6 p.m. Scholarships and multiple child discounts are available. For information, call 830-379-7842.

SHELTER VOLUNTEERS — Guadalupe Valley Family Violence is in need of volunteers for a variety of upcoming events, functions and activities. Help is also needed at the Cranny Thrift Store in areas of sorting, assisting customers and tidying up. FREE VEGGIES — Greens (mostly turnips and some mustard), radishes, some turnip roots are available free to the community in the garden in back of the old Sue Smith School, 607 Jefferson Ave. Please cut your own greens without tromping on others.

RAPPS — Rural Area Parenting Program Services (RAPPS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides parenting, anger management and alcohol awareness classes. These classes are provided by a licensed social worker, parent educator and anger resolution therapist. The certification for the completion of these classes is accepted by the judicial system. PARENTING CONNECTIONS — A new parenting course through the Texas AgriLife Extension will be offered on the first and second Monday of each month from 6-9 p.m. at 607 Jefferson Ave. There is a one-time fee of $30. COMPUTER LAB — Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will open a community computer lab at Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St. Use is completely free and open to all. Stop in on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-4 p.m. to use high-speed Internet, Microsoft Office, and more. Volunteers will be available for anyone in need of assistance. Teatro de Artes is seeking volunteers to offer hospitality and assistance with basic computer skills during our open lab hours. WATERCOLOR SHOW — March is watercolor month and the Seguin Oakwood Art League will display watercolor, acrylic and guache art work between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Silver Center all month. For information call 830-401-4553.
THEATRE RAFFLE — A raffle fundraiser will be held for the Texas Theatre restoration project. First prize is a five-night stay at The Caribbean Court in Vero Beach, Fla. with round-trip airfare for two included. Other prizes include spa days, gift certificates and more. TEATRO AFTER-SCHOOL — Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will offer an after-school program aimed at elementary school children on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Center, 921 W. New Braunfels St. in Seguin. The Craft and Culture program is free and includes a guest artist who will share their talents with the students. Children under 5 must be supervised. FREE TAX-AIDE — Free income tax assistance and electronic filing (E-file) for the elderly, low and medium income taxpayers is available at the Seguin Activity Center at 624 Zorn St. from Feb. 3 to April 10 from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Income tax will be electronically filed — no paper returns. Bring the following with you when you come to the activity center. Social security cards for yourself and dependents; all W-2 forms from employers where you earned a salary; unemployment compensation statements, SSA-1099 forms if you were paid Social Security, all 1099 forms, 1099R forms, any forms indicating federal income tax paid, child care provider information, information on itemized deductions and forms showing original price of stocks purchased, dates of purchase and date and price at time of sale.

BENEFIT CONCERT — Brandon Bennett, the world’s leading Elvis tribute artist, will perform March 20 at the Seguin-Guadalupe County Coliseum. Doors open at 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 and reserved seating is available (only 140 seats, so act fast) for $50. Proceeds benefit the Largest Pecan Project.
PLAYDAY SERIES — The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Posse will begin the 2010 playday series on March 20 at the Posse arena on FM 466 in Seguin. Other dates scheduled are April 10, May 15 and June 19. Rain dates, if needed, will be July 17 and August 21. Events will include goat pulling/tying, pole bending, cloverleaf and straight barrels. There will be no roping events. VETERANS BRICKS — Carter Memorials are again providing veterans bricks for the Guadalupe County Veterans’ Memorial in front of the courthouse. Net proceeds will go to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 61 in Seguin. The bricks may be purchased for any veteran who served any length of time in any branch of the armed forces, young or old, male or female, local or not.
