An afternoon blaze destroyed an empty 18-wheeler near the Niagara Water Bottling Plant on Sunday.

Crews were called about 2 p.m. to the 1700 block of Eighth Street for a tractor-trailer that was on fire.

“When crews arrived, they found a fully involved tractor,” Seguin Fire Chief Dale Skinner said.

The driver reportedly was preparing to pick up a shipment from the facility, Skinner said.

“We were told the driver of the truck was pulled over and sweeping his trailer getting ready for a load at Niagara when he heard the popping sounds. That was when he discovered his vehicle was on fire,” he said.

The fire consumed the tractor, most of the trailer, as well as some of the grass in a nearby field.

“We had to call for additional units because it did set the grass on fire next to it,” he said. “The road is essentially out in the middle field.”

A crew was called in to clean up the fuel spilled from the truck, Skinner said.

“We did have a fuel leakage and we had to contact an environmental company for clean up,” he said.

No injuries were reported.

It is unknown at this time how the fire started.
