In another nearby village, Comanche brave Peta Nacono had received word of the Ranger attack. He had quickly organized a force of more than 400 warriors and was rushed to their aid. Cynthia Ann Parker, his wife, was reported to be at his side during the attack.

Texas Ranger Col. Ford quickly organized his men into a defensive position and the two forces stood facing each other for more than an hour, while the Comanches challenged their enemy Tonkawas to single combat.
