My best guess is it began in the mid-1970s when I taught high school English in Worthington, Ohio. It was around this time of year and among the various creative writing homework I assigned was a simple but, at the same time, profound question: “If you could give any gift this Christmas, what would it be?”

Over the years since then, I’ve posed that question more often than not including to two of the college-level classes I taught and have passed this question on to lots of folks I know — both young and old. At the same time, I have featured some of them in this newspaper space.
