Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part series written by Floyd McKee.

While at my dermatologist, Dr. Robert Magnon, also a history buff with ancestral ties to the early Texas Rangers, we began discussing the historical path of Texas to reach statehood. We wondered how many people know the details of that path. Who can name the six flags that flew over Texas? They fly over many amusement parks in Texas. How many remember when Texas was first mapped by Spain. When did Texas fight for its independence. Mexico was once ruled by Spain. Did Mexico gain its independence from Spain, and if so, when? Did Texas gain its independence from Spain or Mexico? How far north did the Texas northern border once reach? Was Texas once part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803? Where was Guadalupe City?

Floyd McKee is a native of Seguin. He is a retired Air Force Colonel and eight of his ancestors were among the 33 Rangers that organized and developed Walnut Springs and Seguin.
