When I was in high school, I worked in a grocery store and when a customer said he wanted some cigarettes, I would ask, “What is your brand?” That question had quite a different meaning to early settlers. Back then it referenced cattle brands, which in Seguin and Guadalupe County were many and varied.

Brands were first recorded here in 1846, the year that Guadalupe County became a county, with Seguin as the center of government. Prior to that time our county was a part of Gonzales and Bexar Counties.

Floyd McKee is a native of Seguin. He is a retired Air Force Colonel and eight of his ancestors were among the 33 Rangers that organized and developed Walnut Springs and Seguin.
