Not only are we having to endure the miserable weather of the "dog days" (named after the Dog Star, and not for your favorite canine)that's when we have to be on the lookout for a surge in rabies.

For the record, the rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of a rabid animal, in most cases via a bite - or even close contact with the rabid animal, as in the case of bats.
