Marion girls hold off Stockdale

Published November 17, 2009

MARION — There was so much hacking going on between the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Brahmas on Monday night that it’s amazing nobody lost a limb.

The two teams combined to shoot 62 free throws in a contest that was slowed to a halt by countless whistles and turnovers.

Marion ended up converting 25 of its 40 attempts from the charity stripe, grinding out a 51-46 win that improved the team’s overall record to 3-0.

“We were fortunate that when we got to the line, we were able to make them, especially there in the second half,” said head coach Kollyn McWhinney. “If it becomes a free throw-a-thon, then you’ve got to knock them down.”

The most impressive performance from the line was turned in by senior Reyna Noriega, who hit 10 of her 12 free throw attempts, including eight in a row in the fourth quarter.

“I expect that from her,” McWhinney said. “She’s done that for the past two years. When she goes to the line, I’m pretty confident that she’s going to make them.”

In all, Noriega had 25 points in the game, 10 of which came in the final period. The senior broke a 43-43 tie with three and a half minutes remaining in the contest by sinking four consecutive free throws — two for a personal foul and two for a technical foul.

Marion wouldn’t give the lead back, as Stockdale floundered from the line down the stretch, converting just nine of its 22 tries on the evening.

Both teams had trouble hitting shots from the field, as the Lady Bulldogs finished the night shooting just over 22 percent (11-49).

“You worry about someone getting hurt, so I’m glad they were calling the fouls from the standpoint of keeping the girls safe,” McWhinney said. “But it also makes it hard to get into any kind of rhythm.

“It was ugly, but it’s early and we’ll take it.”

Marion led the game 12-7 after a quarter of play, but the Lady Brahmas came back to tie the game at 22 heading into the locker room. The two teams then added 13 points apiece in the third quarter before Noriega and the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead late.

Ashley Jacobsen added 10 points in the victory, while Kyana Fennell had five for the home team. Rounding out the scoring were Maegan Hartman, with four, and Deidra Reasor, Rachel Farris and Haley Jupe, who each had two.

Diana Heinrich notched her only point of the game on a successful third-quarter free throw.

Monday’s win came on the heels of Friday’s 59-40 victory over Gonzales, a game in which Fennell led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Noriega posted 13 points, four boards, three assists and two steals herself, with Ashley Jacobsen contributing eight points, six rebounds and four steals.

Hartman scored 11 points in the win over the Lady Apaches.

The Lady Bulldogs will hit the court again Friday, hosting Lytle at 6:15 p.m.

Seguin falls to Hornets

SEGUIN — The Lady Matadors (1-1) couldn’t muster enough offense to fend off East Central Friday night, as the Lady Hornets stung Seguin 61-45.

The Lady Matadors took a four-point edge into the second quarter, but the visitors outscored them 22-14 to take their own four-point lead into the half.

East Central then won the third period 9-8 and padded its lead with a 21-point fourth quarter.

The Lady Hornets had two players — Diara Reynolds and Claudia Gayton — go for 16 points in the win, while the Lady Mats got a team-best 13 from Tabatha Richardson.

D’Shericka Davis had seven for Seguin, with Sabrina Rangel and Monnarae Martin scoring six apiece in the loss. Madison Koehler added five points and Emma Martinez scored her first four of the season.

Seguin will host San Marcos tonight at 7 p.m.
