Published November 11, 2009

BOERNE — It may not have been the highest-scoring game in the world, but Tuesday night’s season opener against Boerne ending up in the win column for the Lady Matadors.

And really, that’s all that matters.

Seguin (1-0) used a game-high 15 points from senior post player Monnarae Martin to secure a 35-29 win over the Lady Greyhounds (0-1), as head coach Kevin Lewis’s team won every quarter but the second.

The Lady Mats jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first period before heading into halftime up just two points. But Seguin’s defense allowed just 12 points in the second half, helping notch win No. 1 of the 2009-10 season for the ladies wearing the gold and black.

Sophomore Tabatha Richardson finished with 10 points in the victory, while senior guards Liz Young and Madison Koehler put in four points apiece. Junior forward D’Shericka Davis also added two for Seguin.

The Lady Matadors’ next game is Friday, as they host East Central at 7 p.m.

Lady Bulldogs race past Bandera

BANDERA — Senior guard Reyna Noriega paced the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) with 11 points in Marion’s season-opening 52-34 win over Bandera (0-1) Tuesday night.

Sophomore Haley Jupe added nine points in the win, while Ashley Jacobsen, Kyana Fennell and Maegan Hartman each had eight.

In addition to the scoring, Fennell added 10 rebounds, as did Rachel Farris.

“Our defense played very well,” said head coach Kollyn McWhinney. “We were kind of up and down offensively.”

Marion will travel to Gonzales on Friday to play the Lady Apaches at 7:30 p.m.
