Concert highlights mariachi music

SEGUIN — Mariachi singers have a chance to come into their own next week.
On Saturday, Nov. 14, musicians will take the stage at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium with performances that will help to get people interested in the cultural music
“Gran Fiesta Mexicana will be something special because this is something new, and I am sure this will be a great experience,” said organizer Juan Hernandez. “I have been told that people here listen to mariachi, but I don’t think there has ever been a concert.”
Alfonso Torres has been dubbed the new singer of Mexican songs and he will be accompanied that night by a another talented singer, Hernandez said.
“He will be singing and preforming mariachi music,” he said. “There will be special guest Janie Torres.”
Torres said she will be serenading the audience with some contemporary music and a type of cumbia.
The event is Saturday, Nov. 14,0 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 5-11 and admission is free for children under 5.
Included, as part of the tickets, is the chance to win prizes through a raffle, Hernandez said.
