NIXON — Tuesday night’s District 28-2A opener may not have been an easy one for the Lady Panthers (15-11 overall; 1-0 in district), but it ended up a win nonetheless.
Navarro battled Nixon-Smiley for five games before prevailing 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 19-17) in an epic contest.
Three Lady Panthers — Sydawnie Douglass (14), Noelle Kubenka (13) and Hannah Bonds (12) — had double-digit kills in the victory, while setter Kandace Newton finished with a team-high 21 assists.
The elder Bonds also led the way in digs with 18, while younger sister Sadie contributed 11 assists to the effort. Kubenka added 16 digs as well, while Hayley Franzen had 12.
Douglass also notched 10 digs, two aces and one and a half blocks.
Navarro’s next district test will come in six days — and it’s a doozy. The Lady Panthers will host powerhouse Poth at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29.
