Accident at power plant injures two

GUADALUPE COUNTY — Two men were injured late Thursday morning in an accident at the Public Service Enterprise Group’s power plant off Weil Road.
Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Bruce Tubbs said deputies, the Marion Volunteer Fire Department and Schertz EMS were sent to the gas-fired electricity generation plant a little before 11 a.m.
“We received a call at 10:52 a.m. from the 5000 block of Weil Road that a high pressure accident had occurred and that they may be injuries,” Tubbs said.
Marion Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Joseph Rodriguez said his crew arrived just behind Schertz EMS.
“I do not know what the circumstances were,” Rodriguez said. “We understand a lid hit the guy, throwing him back 20 feet from the point of impact. We don’t know exactly what happened, but there was no explosion and there was no fire.”
PSEG Guadalupe Power Partnership’s plant manager, Peter Geissler said one of the plant’s two generating units had been shut down for maintenance, and as part of the process of powering it back up, the generator was pressurized.
Somehow during the inspection process, an access cover broke loose, striking and injuring two men.
Geissler characterized the incident as a “release of pressure” and not an explosion.
Neither man lost consciousness, and both men were able to move their limbs, Geissler said. One was flown to University Hospital, and the other was taken by ground ambulance to Methodist Hospital.
The injured men worked for the Sulzer Corp., out of Houston, which is a contractor employed on the site.
PSEG Spokesman Mike Jennings referred requests for information about the injured men to Sulzer Corp., where an official said one man had suffered minor injuries. The condition of the second was not immediately known. The official did not know the age or hometowns of the victims.
Jennings said the generator unit remained offline Thursday afternoon while officials at the plant worked to determine what had happened.
“Work has stopped, and a thorough investigation has commenced to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident,” Jennings said.
