Take steps to prevent burglaries

Published November 6, 2009

It sounds so easy.

“Lock your car. Take your keys. Hide your belongings.”

And yet, somehow in the rush of everyday life — especially with the busy holiday season upon us — so many forget to take these simple steps and fall victim to car burglars just looking for an opportunity.

The timing couldn’t be better for the beginning of the Seguin Police Department’s campaign to post warning signs around the community, urging residents to protect themselves and their property from sticky fingers.

Similar campaigns have met with success in cities such as Dallas and Victoria. Police Chief Kevin Kelso, who brought plans for the program before City Council in March, said the campaign is a way for the city to be proactive in preventing crimes.

Just about everyone knows that simply locking your doors will deter some burglars who would rather not deal with the time and effort needed to break-and-enter.

However, if a purse, an iPod or some other irresistible object is left out in plain view, some crooks will find a burglary impossible to resist.

Residents should also be on the lookout for unusual activity in their neighborhoods or apartment parking lots. Don’t hesitate to report suspicious people to police.

Be sure to hide any valuables that you may have with you, from personal belongings to Christmas gifts — or better yet — don’t leave anything in your car that you can’t afford to lose.

It takes only a second to make sure a vehicle is secured, but it’s an easy way to keep your holiday joy from turning sour.
