MARION — One local church is giving residents a chance to see Christmas through the ages.
The Redeemer United Church of Christ is hosting their annual Night in Old Bethlehem on Dec. 5 from 4-7 p.m. Yvonne Couch, director of the Marion Community Library, said that visitors will start off the evening in Old Bethlehem and see how things were when Jesus was born.
“This is a tradition that started quite a few years back,” Couch said. “We are going to have a lot of things to do. There will be old-fashioned flat bread-making like they had when Jesus was alive, a wine making demonstration, and crafts for the kids.”
There will also be cookie-making and decorating, and cross-making. There will also be hay rides with hot apple cider and a country store.
In addition to all the activities there will be a live nativity. At 6:15 p.m. everyone is invited into the sanctuary for a live re-telling of the Christmas story told by the library.
Children and their families will have a chance to learn about Santa Claus, and his origins as St. Nicholas and how he ties in to the nativity.
“It’s a really good opportunity for kids to see how Santa Claus is related to their faith,” Couch said. “It’s a non-denominational way to show people the origins of Christmas and how it has progressed through the years.”
The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Refreshments and the country store items are available for purchase. All money earned will go to the Guadalupe County Battered Children’s Shelter and the Communities in School at Marion High School.
