Lady Matadors cruise past Hutto in three

Published November 11, 2009

AUSTIN — After the first 15 points of Tuesday night's regional quarterfinal, it appeared that Seguin — then staring at a 10-5 deficit — had finally met its match.

But just over an hour later, the match was over, with the Lady Matadors (30-13) notching a 3-0 win (25-23, 25-15, 25-22) and punching their ticket to the regional semifinal Friday in San Antonio.

The reversal of fortune came thanks to another comeback effort, as Seguin kept its cool and rallied back to take the opening game by later finishing the set on an impressive 18-11 run.

“They stayed steady in game one,” said head coach Robin Gerlich. “I was so proud of them. They just came back and played point for point, played very even volleyball — not too high, not too low.”

Hutto (24-21) put up a solid block throughout the contest, frustrating the Lady Matadors early. When Seguin finally got into a rhythm, the Lady Hippos were they to answer every hit, with the game one score ending up tied on nine separate occasions.

A late Hutto miscue opened the door for Seguin on its first game point and Kelly Koenig took advantage, fooling the Lady Hippos with a quick tip from the setting position.

It was the perfect counter, as Hutto’s defense was positioning to set up its block on the outside.

“They had a nice block up front,” Gerlich said. “Marquisha (Matthews) said at one point, ‘I’ve been blocked four times tonight.’ And she hasn’t seen that in a while, but the further we go, the more we’re going to see that.”

Matthews seemed to figure things out in the second game, helping her team post a double-digit lead at 21-20 en route to a relatively easy win.

Brooke Abrameit, who had a great all-around match for Seguin, capped the set with a convincing kill.

“I told Coach Stanley about in the middle of game two, ‘Be sure we save a game ball for her tonight,’” Gerlich said of Abrameit, who finished the contest with 27 digs, 13 kills and two aces. “She just really came through and had a huge night.”

The Lady Matadors sealed the sweep in a much closer third game, withstanding a late surge from Hutto to wrap up the contest in just under an hour and a half — less time than it took to drive to Austin and back.

“We gave up some runs I would’ve like to see us stop a little bit sooner, but other than that, I was fairly happy with how they played,” Gerlich said.

Matthews led the Lady Mats with her 15 kills in the match, while Megan Roy contributed 23 digs. Koenig added a match-high 36 assists, while Lauren Muenchow recorded three blocks for Seguin.

With the win, Seguin advances to the regional tournament this weekend at UTSA, opening play on Friday against the winner of Tuesday night’s match between Edouch-Elso and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff.

The start time has not yet been determined.

Navarro sweeps Blanco

WIMBERLEY — In a battle of two teams nicknamed the Lady Panthers, Navarro (24-14) came out on top, winning its regional quarterfinal match 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-22) over Blanco (27-9) Tuesday night.

Sydawnie Douglass posted 14 kills and 10 digs in the win, while Noelle Kubenka came up with 10 digs and nine kills.

Setter Kandace Newton recorded 18 assists, with Sadie Bonds dished out six for the Lady Panthers. Hannah Bonds posted nine kills, while Casey Braun added six assists, three kills and two digs.

Hayley Franzen contributed eight digs in the victory.

Navarro will now face either Freer or Natalia on Friday in the regional semifinals. Both the time and location of that match have yet to be announced.
