Policing is a community effort

Published September 18, 2009

An undercover sting operation that ended with the arrest of one woman on prostitution charge should send a clear message to those looking to make Seguin their base of operations for any criminal enterprise — the Seguin Police Department is watching, and are going to use every tool available to enforce the law.

The way it happened should also send a loud signal to those who call Seguin home — the Seguin Police Department needs your help.

The police department can’t be everywhere at all times and the department depends on local citizens to help them do their job. That means picking up the phone and calling when you see something that looks a little out of the ordinary.

You don’t need an organized neighborhood watch program to keep your eyes and ears open.

The prostitution sting came after a local resident approached Seguin Police Chief Kevin Kelso about what he saw as a possible problem.

The arrest should show that Kelso is serious about making sure concerns don’t go in one ear and out the other.

If you ever get a chance to hear the police scanner traffic, you’ll know that the Seguin Police Department — and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office — both get dispatched quite frequently to scenes at the request of callers who are concerned about a suspicious car or a suspicious person.

A lot of times it ends up being nothing, but there are times when it ends up stopping a crime before it happens, or apprehending the perpetrator shortly after.

This is our community, and people should take an active role in doing everything they can to make it a better place for all of us to live and work.

If you think someone is over at a house that shouldn’t be there, pick up the phone.

If you think there’s a drug dealer standing on your street corner, pick up the phone.

If you see someone hit a car and keep going, pick up the phone.

Kelso and Sheriff Arnold Zwicke can’t do their jobs alone.

They need your help.
