UPCOMING

COMPUTER CLASSES — The Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library will host the following computer classes: Mousercize on Friday, Nov. 6 from 1-2 p.m.; computer basics Friday, Nov. 6 at 2:30-4:30 p.m.; file management on Friday, Nov. 20 at 2-4 p.m. All classes are free and open to the public. SHELTER FUNDRAISER — The Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter will hold a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 6 from 4-7 p.m. at Central Park. For $5, participants will receive a spaghetti dinner. Or you can pick up your dinner plates at the intersection of River and East Donegan streets. Donations benefit the shelter, which provides a safe place for local victims of domestic violence. FRIDAY DANCE — The Silver Center Friday Night Dance will feature the music of Whiskey River on Nov. 6 from 7:3-11 p.m. Admission is $8. Homemade sandwiches are available for a light supper starting at 6:30 p.m.

MCQUEENEY POPPIES — McQueeney VFW Post No. 9213 and the Ladies Auxiliary will hold Poppy Days on Nov. 6 and 7 in McQueeney. Buddy Poppies will be available at the Pic-N-Pac No. 1 at Highway 78 and FM 725 and Pic-N-Pac No. 5 on Highway 725 and Pic-N-Pac No. 10 at the 123 Bypass and Court Street in Seguin. All donations are used to help local veterans, including 19 veterans in Hacienda Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center.

POPPY DAYS — The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 245 volunteers including Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion and Juniors of the Auxiliary, along with Miss Poppy Lena Deharde will be distributing the nine-piece red crepe poppies on Poppy Days, Nov. 6-7 at Handy Andy, Wal-Mart Pic-N-Pac No. 8 to the public for a contribution to remember those men and women who fought and died defending our country. Poppy Days also honors all of the veterans who have willingly served their country in eight decades. The poppies are meant to be worn proudly on Veteran’s Day.

DAV CELEBRATION — The Disabled American Veterans, chapter 61. will hold a 45th anniversary and celebration on Nov. 7 at the National Guard Armory near the fairgrounds in Seguin. Tickets are $10 and the doors open at 7 p.m. The event includes a silent auction, door prizes and music by the Two Way Street Band.

CHOIR REHEARSAL — The first Thanksgiving Day of Praise Fall Concert will be hosted by Second Baptist Church, 609 S. Guadalupe St. The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Nov. 21. Scheduled rehearsals are 3 p.m. on Nov. 7 and a last rehearsal to be announced. FALL FESTIVAL — Seguin Chapter No. 555 Order of The Eastern Star will be hosting their annual Fall Harvest Festival and Craft Fundraiser on Nov. 7 from 4-7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge 1945 W. Kingsbury St. in Seguin. Dinner will include stew and cornbread, iced tea or coffee and dessert. Handmade crafts will also be offered for sale. Proceeds are for scholarships and other local charities.

KC BARBECUE — The Knights of Columbus Council No. 3412 will be selling barbecue chicken on Sunday, Nov. 8. Chicken will be sold after all the Sunday Masses at Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. James Catholic Churches. Also at the barbecue pits behind the K.C. Hall from 7 a.m. to noon. The price is $5 for a whole chicken.

VFW DANCE — The Tom Teboe Band will be playing fantastic country music at the Geronimo VFW 8456 Hall, Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3-6:30 p.m. door/kitchen opens at 2 p.m., at 6808 N Highway 123 in Geronimo. CONCRETE CEMETERY — The Concrete Cemetery Association will meet Sunday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the GVEC meeting room located in La Vernia adjacent to the Nixon State Bank on Highway 87 West. BENEFIT CONCERT — The Palace Theatre will present the country/pop sounds of Natalie Rose as part of the Christian Cupboard Concert Series on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. Donations at the door for the concert series are $3 with a canned good or dry food item, $5 without. SIEMPRE SUSTAINABLE — Siempre Sustainable Network’s monthly meeting will be held Monday, Nov. 9 beginning with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and program/meeting starting at 7 p.m. at Mosaic Community Church, 1201 W. Court St. This month’s presentation is a panel event entitled: “Ecological Literacy and Sustainable Livelihoods from Public Schools.” This event is free and open to the public. CHINA ORIENTATION — The Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be holding an orientation meeting for those interested in a trip package to China. For $1,899, the cost of airfare, hotels, city tours and guides is covered. Those interested in doing business with China can ask to have appointments and meetings set up with business contacts. The trip is nine days and includes four cities. The package is open to anyone. POW-MIA REMEMBRANCE — The annual POW/MIA Remembrance Candlelight Service, a tribute to American Prisoners of War/Missing in Action, will be conducted at Cibolo Valley VFW Post 8315, 1000FM 78 in Schertz, beginning at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9 The public is invited.

The program will be “Mark It, Seguin” and it will be presented by Mary Jo Filip, Director of the City of Seguin Main Street Program. Members are reminded to bring donations for the outreach projects “Socks for Kids” and the Children’s Book Project. Members are also reminded to continue to count hours for their Community Service and record steps for the Walks-A-Million Project. RTA invites you to become a member. SYMPHONY GUILD — The Seguin Chapter of the Mid-Texas Symphony Guild will meet Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 5:30 p.m., at the Silver Center. Members will discuss the annual poinsettia sale, MTS Christmas Concert in December and Symphony Ball and debutante presentation in January.

SEGUIN TOASTMASTERS — The Seguin Premier Toastmasters Club will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from noon to 1 a.m. at the public library. Bring your lunch if you wish. Join us as we all learn to improve our communication skills. All are welcome.

VETERANS CEREMONY — Guadalupe County Veterans Council will hold a ceremony at Veterans Park at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel streets at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in honor of all of our veterans. The Guadalupe County Veterans Council is made up of four veterans groups including the DAV, American GI Forum, American Legion and VFW. The theme for this year’s event is “Women in the Military.” The keynote speaker will be an Air Force major who is a pilot stationed at Randolph AFB. The veterans are invited, as well as the general public.

RELAY MEETING — A committee meeting for the 2010 Guadalupe County Relay For Life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in the Women’s Ministry Room (enter through the Mountain Street door). BOOK TALK — From Jalisco to Veracruz; From Nuevo Leon to Seguin, Friends of the Library presents a new way to experience mariachi music. Yvonne de La Rosa will present a program describing the cultural differences in the regions of Mexico through music and costumes. Come and enjoy a new way of understanding music of Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Seguin Public Library.

CASINO NIGHT — On Nov. 14 the Seguin Elks Lodge will hold a casino night. The event benefits special needs children in the community with scholarships, prosthetics and other assistance not available to them elsewhere. The Elks also provide assistance to veterans. The group is seeking items to use as prizes for the last hour of the casino night. Prizes, monetary donations and services are all welcome. PARENTING CONNECTIONS — A new parenting course through the Texas AgriLife Extension will be offered on the first and second Monday of each month from 6-9 p.m. at 607 Jefferson Ave. There is a one-time fee of $30. ESPANOL CLUB — Are you learning Spanish with Mango Languages? Come and practice your new skills at the library. Join in an hour of conversational Spanish at the Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library on Monday Nov. 16 from 6-7 p.m. The Language Club will give you the opportunity to practice your Spanish speaking skills in an informal setting. SHELTER VOLUNTEERS — The Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter is in need of volunteers for office work, children’s social hour and countless other activities. CHRISTMAS VESPERS — TLU Christmas Vespers will be presented Dec. 4-6 at Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5; and at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6. Vespers is an annual Christmas celebration of music and word at Texas Lutheran, and this year’s performance, under the direction of Dr. Doug Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music, is titled, “How Still He Rests.” Tickets for Christmas Vespers will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 2. These tickets are free, but necessary because of the popularity of the annual program. Tickets will be available at the TLU Bookstore, located in the Alumni Student Center on campus. Bookstore hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the TLU Bookstore will be open 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Ticket orders may also be placed by phone, e-mail, and online. When ordering tickets, be sure to include your name, phone number, address, date and time of performance you wish to attend, and the number of tickets needed. THANKSGIVING CONCERT — Second Baptist Church will host a Thanksgiving Day of Praise Fall Concert, featuring performers from all over the community. The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Second Baptist, 609 S. Guadalupe St. The choir will be directed by Richard E. Wilson of David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Austin and features guest mucians from Austin. Proceeds go to the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program.
