BASTROP — Apparently there’s another team in the Seguin area that’s also fond of heart-stopping playoff wins.

Head coach Jackie Baker’s Navarro Lady Panthers (23-14) pulled out a closely-fought area-round victory Thursday night in Bastrop, unseating No. 18 Salado 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 18-16).

Senior Sydawnie Douglass came through with a huge performance for Navarro, recording 25 digs and 20 kills in the five-game win.

Right behind her was fellow senior Kandace Newton, who posted a team-high 31 assists and added 19 more digs for the Lady Panthers. Noelle Kubenka contributed 14 kills, followed by Samantha Nichols’ 12 and Hannah Bonds’ 11. Bonds also finished with 17 digs, while sister Sadie posted 12 assists and nine digs.

Stephanie Moeller chipped in six kills, six digs and a block and Kubenka also added two aces and 17 digs in the win, which put the Panthers in the regional quarterfinals.

Navarro will play on either Monday or Tuesday, drawing the winner of tonight’s Schulenberg-Blanco match.

No. 3 Columbus defeats Marion

GONZALES — The Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to an end Tuesday night as the Columbus Cardinals scored a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-23, 25-7) over Marion at Gonzales High School.

“The girls played tough for two games against the No. 3-ranked team in the state,” head coach Bernice Voigt said via e-mail. “I’m very proud of all the girls — we showed a lot of heart tonight.”

Senior Ashley Jacobsen finished with 11 digs, seven kills, five assists and three aces for the Lady Bulldogs, capping off one of the most impressive seasons in the program’s recent history.

Lauren Franke led the team with her eight assists in the loss, while Deidra Reasor showed her all-around talent by posting 10 digs, five kills and two and a half blocks.

Danielle Brown and Ashley Torres each added aces for Marion, with Diana Heinrich contributing three and a half blocks.
