Navarro boys edge St. Mary's Hall
Published November 24, 2009
GERONIMO — The Navarro Panthers (2-1) survived a late three-point barrage by St. Mary's Hall Tuesday night, holding off the visiting Bears 48-46.
Senior A.K. Williams scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half as Navarro won despite allowing St. Mary's Hall to penetrate and dish for plenty of open looks down the stretch.
“We’re getting beat off the dribble quite a bit and once that rotation comes, you’ve got open three point shooters,” said Navarro head coach Rick Onofre. “And that’s how they were able to get back in the game.”
The Bears cut a 46-40 Navarro lead in half on a three pointer that came with 21 seconds left on the clock, later knocking down another trey after Tate Johnson went one-for-two at the line.
Down 47-46, St. Mary’s Hall intentionally fouled Johnson again with five seconds left, watching as the junior forward missed the front end of a one-and-one.
No worries.
Cody Jandt had his teammate’s back, securing the offensive rebound and absorbing another intentional foul to leave three ticks on the clock.
Jandt hit one of two foul shots and St. Mary’s Hall was forced to heave a half-court prayer that was off the mark, giving Onofre his second win with the Panthers.
Still, the coach said his team has to cut down on the miscues like the ones that allowed the Bears to stay within striking distance.
“It was fast-paced, and that’s what we want, but we’d like to control it just a little bit better and not rush things,” Onofre said. “We had 11 turnovers at half and then we ended up with around 17 turnovers — better than 21 from last game but still, that’s quite a bit.”
After being tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter, the two teams got their offenses going in the second, with the Panthers shooting a scorching 58 percent from the field en route to taking a four-point lead at halftime.
Sophomore guards Chris Arce and Dakota Goodwin came up big for Navarro in the quarter, as Arce notched five points and two steals while Goodwin recorded four points and one theft of his own.
Williams then made his presence known in the second half with multiple big buckets, keeping the Panthers ahead by four or five points for the majority of the time.
“He’s our senior leader,” Onofre said of Williams. “There’s other seniors on the team but I think he’s the one that’s got to emerge.”
Williams scored the first four points of the third quarter to give Navarro a 28-20 lead, prompting a quick timeout from the Bears
Arce ended the game with eight points for Navarro, with Johnson adding seven and Jandt chipping in five.
The Panthers will be right back on the court tonight, hosting Lago Vista at 8 p.m.
