Bike, car collision sends man to the hospital

SEGUIN — A 29-year-old Seguin man was flown to a San Antonio trauma center early Wednesday after a Kingsbury Street collision between his bicycle and a car, police say.
Police officer Martina Wissmann said police and paramedics went to the intersection of Kingsbury and Fleming Drive after the 1:22 a.m. accident.
There, they found Gary Phillips, 29, bleeding from injuries sustained when he was struck by a car driven by a New Braunfels man.
“The driver of the car was in the outside lane, westbound, and the bicyclist was going in the same direction and had no lights,” Wissmann said. “The driver of the vehicle did not see the bike and ran into it.”
Phillips was flown to University Hospital with non-capacitating injuries, Wissmann said.
No information was available on his condition Wednesday evening.
Wissmann said the accident might have been avoided if Phillips’s bike had the legally required lights for riding at night.
“Bikes have to be properly lit, and reflectors alone don’t do the job,” Wissmann said. “We watch for them and sometimes even we don’t see them at night.”
The accident remained under investigation.
