Marion dominates Poteet, forces tiebreaker
Published October 27, 2009
MARION — Playing with its season on the line, the Lady Bulldog volleyball team (23-10, 7-5) came through with one of its most complete performances of the year Tuesday night against Poteet.
Led by senior Ashley Jacobsen — one of the most well-rounded players in the area — Marion came out firing and outplayed the Lady Aggies in every facet, winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-11).
The victory kept the Lady Bulldogs’ playoff hopes alive, setting up a rematch with Poteet (17-18, 7-5) Friday night in Floresville. The winner of that contest claims the final postseason spot in District 27-4A — while the loser gets a head-start on basketball season.
And with the way her team played on Tuesday, Marion head coach Bernice Voigt thinks that the Lady Bulldogs have a good shot at becoming the fourth prep team from the Seguin area to advance to the state playoffs.
“We had a real good practice yesterday and we came in with a lot of enthusiasm tonight and it just showed,” Voigt said. “They played with a lot of heart and they want to make the playoffs.”
The match began with two big aces from Jacobsen, which was a sign of things to come in a match thoroughly dominated by the Lady Bulldogs.
Five of Jacobsen’s match-high nine kills came in the opening set, as Marion jumped out to a 7-1 lead before pushing the advantage into double-digits at 19-9. Junior Deidra Reasor later capped the game one with a kill, as she and Jacobsen served as the tone-setters for the Lady Bulldogs in what was without a doubt the team’s biggest match of the year.
“When (Jacobsen) was on fire, the rest of the team just picked up on it.,” Voigt said. “She’s a leader and everybody feeds off of her and Deidra.”
Poteet grabbed a slim lead to begin game two, but once again Jacobsen was there, notching two more aces to give Marion a 5-3 lead.
The two teams then battled to an 11-11 tie, with the Lady Aggies looking to even up the match at one game apiece.
From that point, however, Marion used an impressive 14-2 run to close the set and take permanent control of the contest, receiving a big ace from junior Danielle Brown and two kills from junior Ashley Torres along the way.
Game three was similar to game one in that it was never really in doubt. Jacobsen and Torres struck early, with sophomore Diana Heinrich and junior Hailey Speer using their height to keep Poteet’s attack off balance for much of the evening.
In the end, the Lady Bulldogs just wanted to win more — and it showed.
“They needed to keep going,” Voigt said. “They don’t want to lose on their home court — they want to go to playoffs.”
Reasor, Jacobsen and Speer paced Marion’s attack with five kills each, with Reasor adding six assists. Senior Lauren Franke dished out 11 assists to lead Marion, while Brown had a team-high 16 digs. Right behind her were junior Shay Caddell and Torres, who posted 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Senior Shelby Thomas also added a kill in the win, with Heinrich recording two.
The Lady Bulldogs will now prepare for a winner-take-all tiebreaker against the same Poteet squad, scheduled to be held at Floresville High School at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Voigt invites all the rowdy Bulldog fans to come be a part of the action.
“Make a trip to Floresville Friday night,” the coach said. “We can use all of you down there.”
Lady Matadors cruise past Tivy
SEGUIN — The Seguin volleyball team (26-13, 10-2) had little trouble with Kerrville Tivy Tuesday night, sweeping the Lady Antlers 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-11) at Goldie Harris Gym.

Matthews also served five aces, while Megan Reiley notched three blocks.
