Event will aid the family of fallen deputy

Published July 28, 2010

SEGUIN — A fundraiser for the family of a Guadalupe County sheriff’s deputy who died unexpectedly at a June family function is set for Sunday.

Guadalupe County 100 Club President Angela Mark said the group founded by the Seguin Board of Realtors in 2009 to help the families of fallen law enforcement officers and first responders will host a barbecue fundraiser for Andie Simmons at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Seguin from noon to 8 p.m.

Simmons, 34, of New Braunfels, served as a detention officer in the Guadalupe County Jail and later as a patrolman. He was stricken June 18 at a reunion in Kerrville and pronounced dead shortly afterward at a local hospital. He left behind his wife, Brooke, and twin 10-month-old daughters, Addison and Allison — as well as his second family, Sheriff Arnold Zwicke and his stunned employees.

“The community response has been overwhelming,” Mark said. “We’ve had so many people call and say they want to help or donate something — write a check — and get it to Brooke.”

Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Kevin Frazier and Guadalupe County sheriff’s deputies and detention officers will be preparing barbecued chicken and sausage for the event. Dinners can be eaten at the KC hall or taken home, Mark said.

“They can pick up barbecue plates from noon to 4 p.m. at the drive-through, and we’ll open the doors from 4-8 p.m.,” Mark said. “Tickets are $8.”

The event will include a silent auction of nearly 150 items donated by area residents and businesses that includes music memorabilia, as well as a bucket drop.

Auction items will include a fishing trip, concealed handgun courses and hunting trips and gift certificates to many local businesses — including more than a dozen area restaurants.

But the event won’t just be a fundraiser or a dinner.

It will include a bake sale, and it’s also going to be a party.

“We’ll have two bands, and Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace “Cass” Castellanos will be DJ’ing,” Mark said.

Bucket drop tickets are available from 4-8 p.m. at the KC hall.

Barbecue tickets can be purchased in advance at Century 21 United D&D Realtors where Mark works, at KWED and at the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’re busy getting ready, and it’s all pretty well taken care of,” Mark said, thanking Frazier, the sheriff’s office and all the local businesses that have contributed to the effort on behalf of the Simmons family. “We only need to set up and begin barbecuing. The community has been awesome.”
