Wagner too much for Seguin
Published February 12, 2008
SEGUIN — The Seguin girls basketball team played in its first playoff game in 12 years on Monday.
And Wagner, the No. 8 team in the state, was waiting like a wolf licking its chops. The Lady Thunderbirds ran out to a 27-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back as they ended the Lady Matadors’ season with a 66-17 loss at Goldie Harris Gymnasium in the bi-district round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
“Wagner played like a state-ranked team [Monday],” said Seguin coach Kevin Lewis. “Even when we would execute a pass play, it seemed like there was always someone there to block our shots.”
Wagner (31-1) advanced to the area round of the playoffs where it will face the Warren-Corpus Christi Ray winner at a time, date and site to be determined.
Seguin ended the season 12-21, but made a lot of strides as the season progressed. The Lady Matadors were able to shake off an 0-8 start by finishing 7-7 in District 25-5A to claim the fourth-place playoff spot.
Wagner established momentum from the get-go as the Lady Thunderbirds went to their frontcourt duo of Amber Roberson and BreAnna Brock to gain an edge inside, and guard Jessica Sommers stymied Seguin with numerous fastbreak baskets off of steals. Sommers and Roberson scored 11 and 7 points, respectively, in the first quarter to put Wagner on top, 27-2.
Wagner scored the first 8 points of the second quarter to build a 35-2 lead before Alyssa Hall’s free throw snapped the Lady Thunderbirds’ unanswered points streak at 27. Claudia Gallegos ended Seguin’s field goal drought with a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play in the second quarter.
Gallegos finished the game with 7 points for Seguin — a team-high for the senior. Hall, the other senior suited up for the Lady Matadors, finished with 3 points. Burgundy Davis also is a senior but did not play because of a knee injury.
“I’m really proud of the way Claudia, Alyssa and Burgundy stuck things out for us,” Lewis said. “I was their third coach in four years, and they easily could’ve given up on us, but they believed in the team aspect and in what we were doing.”
