GUADALUPE COUNTY — A 62-year-old San Antonio man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a rollover accident on Interstate 10.
Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Larry Morawietz said the victim, who was driving with his wife, was believed killed instantly in the accident that caved in the roof of his Ford Expedition.
“The deceased was westbound on Interstate 10, lost control, crossed the median and the eastbound side and started flipping,” Morawietz said, nodding at the demolished vehicle. “He was dead right there.”
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jeff Lyde said troopers were investigating to determine what caused the man, who was driving westbound on I-10 about a mile west of Santa Clara Road, to cross over the center strip and the eastbound lanes before rolling over onto an eastbound pickup truck.
One possible explanation was that the tread on one of the vehicle’s tires had stripped off, and troopers were working to determine if that was a contributing factor, Lyde said.
New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kurt Strey said first responders treated the driver of the pickup and a woman who was a passenger in the Expedition at the scene. Both were taken to hospitals in San Antonio.
The name of the victim was not released pending notification of his next-of-kin.
