SISD board in top five for state award

Published September 10, 2009

SEGUIN — Congratulations are in order for the Seguin ISD school board.

The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has listed Seguin ISD as one of its top five school boards in the state for 2009. TASA reports that the Seguin ISD board exemplifies excellence through support of steady, consistent academic gains created by implementation of a wide variety of research-based programs.

“This is very exciting,” Seguin ISD spokeswoman Melissa Matthews-Woolard said. “It is a great honor.”

The recognition comes just after SISD was named among the region-level finalists for the Outstanding School Board award, being named Honor Board for Region 13. There are 20 regions in the state and SISD’s board will represent Region 13, which includes all of the Austin area.

Superintendent Irene Garza is proud of the board’s recognition, and believes it is well deserved.

“It is a great honor for our board of trustees, our school district, and our community,” Garza said. “I think this validates the hard work our board and our district does.”

The SISD Board will be interviewed at the TASA convention in Houston, and could be named the 2009 Outstanding School Board in October. They will also be recognized as an Honorable Region Board at the convention.

The other school boards in the running are Lamar CISD, Splendora ISD, Weatherford ISD, and Floresville ISD.

SISD board members are also excited about the recognition. School board president Louis Q. Reyes III says that it is a victory for not only the school board, or school district, but the community.

“As the president of the Seguin ISD School Board, I feel honored first, to be part of a recognized school district, and second, to be a part of this wonderful board,” Reyes said. “I am thankful for the board, the Seguin ISD employees, the community, and of course, the students.”
