Marion cooking up annual Pannas Festival

Published December 4, 2009

MARION — The New Berlin cook who took home the trophy one year ago for the world’s best pannas intends to defend Saturday at the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Pannas Festival cook-off.

Lisa Kunde, who is coordinating the cook-off in conjunction with Marion Trade Days said about 10 entries have been received — including one from John Bohannon of Brietzke’s Tavern in New Berlin.

Bohannon confirmed the entry on Wednesday.

“Yes sir!” he said. “We sure will be there.”

Bohannon said he would bring the same recipe handed down by Walter and Dee Dee Brietzke as last year for the meat and meal-based loaf dish that is typically sliced, fried and served for breakfast.

It came to Texas and the Guadalupe County area with German immigrants, and is available in some local stores.

Saturday is an opportunity for the public to taste several varieties of the folk dish and vote for the best in the 11 a.m. judging, Kunde said.

“Some will prepare it there, some will bring it ready to slice and fry,” Kunde said.

Trade Days is conducted on the park area in front of city hall from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday’s rendition will include a photo opportunity with Santa, a stop by the Pony Express at 10 a.m., a pannas eating contest at 1 p.m., pannas sculpting and food concessions and games. Randall Morris will play from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Pannas Festival concludes with a 42 domino tournament that begins at 3 p.m.

In case of rain, the events will move to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
