Siblings bring home honors from state fair

Published October 20, 2009

SEGUIN — Elizabeth Dick took a different kind of livestock project to the State Fair of Texas.

Seguin High School senior Elizabeth Dick brought home the grand prize from the science fair at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Elizabeth said she had was surprised to learn she was the grand champion.

“I was shocked,” Elizabeth said. “There were tons of good projects there.”

She said she has been working on her project for a couple of years now. It was a genetics project that tested parasite resistance for livestock. In addition to being grand champion, she also was division champion for the biochemistry division.

Elizabeth wasn’t the only Seguin High School student at the state fair — her brother, sophomore Gavin Dick, also took home an award.

Gavin was division champion for his entry in environmental biology. He used Asian mussels in Lake Placid as a bioindicator of the conditions of the lake.

The brother and sister duo both worked hard on their projects with help of their sponsor, Seguin High School science teacher Donna Boelter. They also received some help from Texas Lutheran University, where they were allowed to work in the more advanced sciences labs.

The trip to the fair wasn’t all about work, however, as the two had a chance to walk around the fairgrounds.

“I really liked walking around seeing everything,” Gavin said. “We got to see the world’s largest pig. That was pretty interesting. It was huge.”

Gavin and Elizabeth both brought home banners for their awards. Elizabeth also received a belt buckle and a $5,000 scholarship to the school of her choice. She said she is excited about the rest of the science fairs in her high school career, but also looking forward to attending college.

“I’m really looking forward to graduation,” Elizabeth said. “I plan on going to A&M to study genetics.”

While Gavin has a few more years of high school left, he is also excited about the science fairs, and eventually, college. He plans to study aerospace engineering.
