Two Seguin men hurt in shooting

Published May 10, 2009

MARION — Police are investigating a pre-dawn shooting incident at a Marion party Saturday in which two Seguin men were wounded.

Police Chief Reed Crane said sheriff’s deputies and Marion police officers dispatched to the area of La Vernia Street and Wetz Road at 3:49 a.m. to investigate a report of a loud party arrived to find that shots had been fired — and that two Seguin men, one age 19 and the other 21, had been wounded. The younger man had been shot three times, Crane said. The older man was struck once.

The officer didn’t identify the victims or the man believed to have shot them pending the outcome of the investigation into the incident.

“We have a lot of witnesses to interview,” Crane said.

The pair was driven to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center where they were treated for their injuries.

Crane did not say where they were wounded, but none of the injuries, believed inflicted with a small-caliber handgun, were considered life-threatening.

Crane, Police Sgt. Jay Whiston and Cpl. Darren Haverstock were in the early stages of their crime scene investigation Saturday, Crane said.

The police chief said the shooting apparently grew out of a dispute at a party thrown to honor a local man who was home on leave from the U.S. Marine Corps — reportedly after one faction accused members of another of drinking their beer.

“The Sheriff’s Office responded first, and then we were called,” Crane said. “Investigation is indicating the party got out of hand, and an argument ensued over alcohol.”

Two men on the losing end of the dispute are believed to have come to Seguin for reinforcements, and then returned to Marion, and another argument ensued.

During the course of the second dispute, the officer said the Marine was struck across the head with an object Crane did not identify.

A second fight ensued, and the Seguin faction jumped into the back of a pickup that sped off and then turned around and returned to the scene, Crane said.

As the truck travelled down La Vernia, multiple shots were fired at it, Crane said.

It is believed the Marine was the one doing the shooting, Crane said.

“It’s unknown at this point how many times the truck was hit,” Crane said.

The truck sped back to Seguin, delivering the two injured men to GRMC, Crane said.

No charges had been filed Saturday pending outcome of the investigation.
