Lanky Santa Claus seeking a new home
Published December 23, 2009
Santa Claus is looking for a new home and time is running out.
The long-legged Saint Nick has made his way around town as the key piece for the Seguin-Oakwood Art League’s Christmas float during the holiday stroll, and then found his way to local artist Roger Betschler’s front lawn. Betschler said the Christmas icon needs a new home after the holidays or he will be disassembled.
“Once the Seguin-Oakwood Art League committee met after the parade, we decided we were going to get rid of him, but my wife wanted to keep him until after Christmas,” Betschler said.
So the large Santa has been gracing the Betschlers’ lawn ever since. It isn’t the typical Santa Claus though, this version is a tall order, nearly reaching the roof of the Betschlers’ two-story home. He said his neighbors have enjoyed the interesting take on Santa Claus.
“My neighbors are all really amused by him,” Betschler said. “They come by and take pictures of him.”
The jolly, old elf was created by the Seguin-Oakwood Art League for the holiday stroll. Betschler said it wasn’t the easiest float to create.
“A lot went into this Santa,” Betschler said. “It took a good month to make him. We knew when we started it was going to be difficult because of the mechanics of getting his legs and arms to move. There was a lot of paper mache used to create him, so the rainy weather has been a little rough on him.”
While Betschler doesn’t want this unique Santa Claus to be torn apart, he said there just isn’t room for him in their home.
“The Art League doesn’t have a formal home,” Betschler said. “So all of our work, and things are spread out in the different members homes. We’re hoping to get a formal meeting space soon where we can keep things.”
