Pair of local girls head to pageant
Published June 24, 2009
SEGUIN — Two local girls are on their way to Houston to participate in the All American Miss State Competition.
Ja-la Crawford, 5 and Gabriela Barrera, 10 both received an open call invite and were called back to take part in the pageant.
Being named state finalists, both contestants will make the voyage to Houston for the contest set for June 26-27.
The pageant is divided into age groups separating the girls into two categories. Ja-la is in the 4-6 year group called the Princesses and Gabriela is in the 7-9 year group called the Pre-Teens.
This is a new experience for both of the young girls.
Jessica Moreno, Gariela’s mom, said even though this is her daughter’s first pageant she feels like it would go right along with activities she has participated in.
“She loves to model,” she said. “Since she was three years old she has been in stuff like cheerleading and gymnastics, she plays the accordion, dances the Ballet Folklorico and she really loves it.”
For the pageant, the girls have to show in basic events charity, personal introduction, the interview and formal wear. The charity portion involves the girls donating a used book or an old toy. While the personal introduction includes the girls presenting themselves to the judges, the interview is about the judges asking the girls basic everyday questions.
Winners of the exhibition get a chance to compete at the national level. The 2009 National American Miss Competition is to be held at Disneyland in California Nov. 22-28 for the Princess and the Pre-Teen Class. Making it to the national competition does not stop at the basic pageant, the mothers of both girls said. Each of the girls will be entered into optional categories to vie for a chance to make it to the land of Mickey Mouse.
The alternative events the two girls are entered in range from casual wear to a photogenic competition to a talent competition. Each entry cost an additional $50.
Tiffany Crawford, mother of Ja-la, decided early that her daughter would not compete against girls who used cosmetics or anything else to enhance their beauty and after receiving the invitation for an open call in the mail, Crawford said she knew this was the perfect one for Ja-la.
“It is more about inner beauty,” she said.
