Bulldogs’ season ends with 42-27 loss

Published November 8, 2009

POTEET — Both the Marion Bulldogs (1-9, 0-5) and the Poteet Aggies (4-5, 1-4) went into Friday night’s game looking for their first win in district play.

The Aggies were the ones who found what they were looking for, coming out on top 42-27 in a well-fought contest.

Marion’s Nathayn DeHoyos recorded his best performance of the season with 212 yards receiving on 13 catches. Hunter Brietzke led the Bulldogs in rushing with 108 yards on 17 carries, while Derek Pierce went 24-36 passing for 295 yards, proving to be his best performance of the season as well.

Marion’s Matthew Murdoch came up with an interception on the Aggies’ first possession of the game, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize, missing a field goal.

The Aggies regained possession after the field goal attempt and put the first points of the game on the board with a Matt Santos 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the possession.

It was the beginning of a huge night for Santos, who finished the ballgame with 439 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries.

The Bulldogs fumbled on their following two possessions, the second leading to a one-yard touchdown run from Santos. Domingo Casias’ extra point made the score 14-0 with 9:47 left in the second quarter.

Following a Marion punt, the Aggies drove the ball 71 yards, completed with a 30-yard Brandon Herrera touchdown run. Casias tacked on the extra point making the score 21-0 with 4:07 to go in the half.

Pierce was intercepted on the Bulldog’s next possession, setting up another Santos touchdown on the first play — this one from 75 yards away. Casias’ kick left the score 28-0 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs turned things around in the third quarter, however, putting together an eight-play, 50-yard scoring drive on their opening possession. Brietzke’s one-yard touchdown run completed the drive and Austin Langemeier’s extra point kick made the score 28-7 with 8:50 left in the third quarter.

Sean Wolff then recovered an Aggie fumble, leading to another Bulldogs score. A 53-yard reception by DeHoyos set up a two-yard scoring run by Brietzke with 4:42 left in the third. Langemeier’s kick narrowed the gap 28-14.

Two possessions later, the Aggies’ Santos went 77 yards on the first play yet again to put more points on the board. Casias’ extra point put the Aggies up 35-14 with 11:33 to go in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs marched back with a 12-play, 87-yard scoring drive of their own, as Pierce took the ball in for a two-yard touchdown run with 6:35 left in the game. A missed extra point left the score at 35-20.

Santos came back to score his fifth touchdown of the game on a 52-yard run with 5:25 remaining on the clock. Casias’ kick made the score 42-20.

DeHoyos accounted for all 44 yards on two receptions on the Bulldogs’ following possession, capped by a six-yard touchdown catch. Langemeier’s kick finalized scoring in the game, leaving the Aggies victorious 42-27.

Marion will now look toward the hardwood, as the Bulldog boys will kick off the 2009-2010 basketball season on Nov.14 at home in a scrimmage against the Lytle Pirates. The freshman game is set to start at 10 a.m., followed by the JV and varsity.
