Wanda L. Raney
Wanda L. Raney of Alamogordo passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at her home. Wanda was born Dec. 11, 1947, in Deport, Texas to Lewis Thomas and Sara (Strawn) Clement. Wanda married Jason Raney July 15, 1989, in Alamogordo.
She was a teacher at the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired from 1976 to 2009. She was named “Teacher of the Year” by the Parents Who Care group of the school for the 1982-83 school years. In 2009, she received the Diane Baker Award from the school. At the time of her death, the school was in the process of naming one of its buildings in her name.
She held memberships in the Alamogordo Women’s Bowling Assoc., Space City Lady Kegler’s Assoc., and the American Education Assoc. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Jason Raney, of Alamogordo; a son, Sean McLain and his wife Jessica; a grandson, Dylan McLain all of Sheppard AFB. Wichita Falls, Texas; a stepson, Chris Raney and his wife Candy; a stepdaughter, Michelle Hicks; four step grandchildren, Dakota Hicks, Aiden Raney, Madelyn Raney, and Cameron Crawford all of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mildred Stone and her husband Weldon of Clardy, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a plethora of students from her many years of teaching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy McLain on Dec. 20. 1984; a son, Kevin McLain on Aug. 2, 1990; and a sister Charlotte Muecke in 2006.
The staff, former and current students of the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired will sit as a group at the service.
Pallbearers will be members of the Alamogordo Men’s Kegler’s Assoc. A private interment will be held at a later time at Monte Vista Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-7p.m. on Wednesday March 10, 2010 at Hamilton O’Dell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday March 11, 2010 at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout and Rev. Mary Taken officiating.
The Raney family has entrusted Hamilton-O’Dell Funeral Home to make the service arrangements.
