Seguin celebrates area’s Hispanic heritage
Published September 17, 2009
The Seguin Heritage Museum is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month in style with a vibrant collection of traditional Hispanic dance
costumes.
The Heritage Museum is one of several locations around town showing their support for Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on Tuesday.
Pat Howell, an employee at the museum says people have really enjoyed the newest display.
“It has only been up a few days, but each day there are more people here to see it,” Howell said. “They love the new exhibit. They really like all the colors and details of the costumes.”
The exhibit at the museum showcases six traditional Hispanic dance costumes, and a collection of newspaper articles about Hispanic culture and heritage in Seguin. There are also a few displays that give information about Juan Seguin and his role in the Texas Revolution, and the city of Seguin.
Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin and the Texas Commission on the Arts have collaborated to bring the displays of Hispanic heritage to Seguin.
Yvonne De La Rosa says Hispanic Heritage Month is an important celebration for the whole community.
“We’re such a melting pot,” De La Rosa said. “It’s important that everyone take time to learn about all the different cultures there are, not just the Hispanic ones.”
On Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will host “Poetry In Motion” an open mic night for poets and short story writers.
De La Rosa says the poetry does not have to focus on Hispanic heritage, but the event will have Hispanic artists on hand, and that everyone is invited to participate. Anyone interested in the event can call De La Rosa at 210-367-7832.
In addition to the exhibit at the Heritage Museum, there are also displays at Chirojava, Briesemeister Middle School, the Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center, the American Bank of Texas, and Texas Lutheran University.
Ann Maria Gonzalez, an associate professor in Spanish at TLU, said there will be a number of cultural activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on campus. The festivities will include a number of free performances including a musical performance called “Azul Presents: Viaje alrededor de Latinomerica,” on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium and a tango performance on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. also in Jackson Auditorium.
Gonzalez urges everyone to take part in the celebration.
“People can’t deny the Hispanic influence and presence in America,” Gonzalez said. “We want to invite people who may not know so much about Hispanic heritage to come and learn. The knowledge they gain may help them to understand the Hispanic culture better.”
Anyone interested in learning more about local Hispanic Heritage Month activities can contact the Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin at 830-401-0232 or visit www.teatrodeartes.org, or visit the TLU Web site at www.tlu.edu .
