Bakery opens at Silver Center

Published November 3, 2009

SEGUIN — Smells of fresh breads, sticky buns and fruit-filled pastries filled the front room of the Silver Center as its newest fundraising branch opened shop.

Sweet Things, a new bakery counter at the center, turned it’s sign to “Open” with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday.

Alisa Seleen, Silver Center director, said she hopes the small store will bring in some new business for the center.

“I was just trying to come up with another way to bring the public over to the service center,” she said. “We kept seeing the signs downtown that said bakery wanted, so we decided to do a small bakery with items that you don’t get at H-E-B or Wal-Mart. Everything will be baked daily.”

Helping out in the kitchen is Valerie Franken. She has worked at the Silver Center for two years but has been a baked goods connoisseur for much longer.

Menu items will vary from one day to the next with a guarantee of something for everyone, whether it’s for a sweet tooth or a health nut, Franken said.

“We are going to have different breads, many danishes, sweet rolls and we have the ooey-gooey buns, kolaches which are filled with apple,” she said. “We are going to have three or four different scones and healthy muffins. Every day it will be something different.”

Seleen agreed, adding that the dough will hopefully satisfy any palette.

“We are going to increase our bread so that we will have some type of breakfast bread or some flavored bread that will be good for paninis,” she said.

While the selection of the items will change from day to day, there will be a monthly constant with a little outside, professional help, Seleen said.

“We are going to have the cheesecake of the month,” she said, adding that this month features pumpkin cheesecake. “We are not going to bake them but we did call the Cheesecake Factory and the cheesecake of the month will come from them. We will sell them by the slice, so that you don’t have to buy the whole pie for just a slice.”

If the occasion rises for something that may not be on the daily menu or just a craving that may need to be satisfied, Franken said it’s just a phone call away.

“If you want something special we are going to take special orders, but they need to call a day or more before,” she said. “We are going to take special orders for Christmas and then we are also going to have the cheesecake.”

Since the Silver Center is a not-for-profit organization, all proceeds from the bakery will go back into the center, Seleen said.

Sweet Things will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday-Friday. For special orders call 830-303-6612.

During the unveiling of the newest business in town, the Silver Center also drew their winners of the gift card raffle.

Seleen said it was still undetermined as to the amount of tickets that were sold but she estimated that it was somewhere in the thousands.

“It was probably close to 2,000-2,500 at $5 a piece,” she said. “We had a lot of donations from several local businesses, large and small.”

The raffle tickets drawn were for gift cards ranging from $200 to $1,000.

Winners included John Wright of Schertz who was awarded the $1,000 gift card, Margarett Svatek won $500, Billy Elliot from Luling $300 and Mary Swope $200, Ellie Woytek won a $50 gift card and Betty Dietert won a gift bag.
