MARION — On Tuesday night, Marion was kind enough to spot visiting Stockdale a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

From that point forward, all the Bulldogs (3-1) did was outscore the Brahmas 53-19 in the final three periods to pick up a lopsided 67-35 win in front of their home crowd.

After finding itself down by a bucket at 16-14 after one quarter of play, Marion kicked its attack into overdrive, building a 32-23 advantage by halftime.

The Bulldogs' defense then continued its stingy play in the second half, adding a 15-6 win in the third quarter and a 20-6 victory in the fourth to seal the 32-point blowout.

Marion saw three players finish in double-figures, led by sophomore Derek Pierce, who put in a game-high 17.

Behind him was junior guard Nathayn DeHoyos, who scored 16, and fellow sophomore post player Alex Eicher, who had his best game of the year thus far, putting in 13.

The scoring was rounded out by junior guard Oscar Rhodes (six points), senior guard Jose Inskeep (five), senior forward Matt Radtke (five), sophomore forward Doug Giles (three) and junior forward Austin Langemeier (two).

The Bulldogs' next challenge will be its own Marion Invitational Basketball Tournament, which begins play on Friday. Marion hosts Nixon-Smiley at 1:30 p.m. in the team's opening-round contest.

Panthers edge Austin Waldorf

GERONIMO — The Navarro Panthers (4-1) held a slim 23-20 lead over Austin Waldorf at halftime Tuesday night and eventually held on for a win by that same margin.

Navarro triumphed 51-48 in a hard-fought game, using big scoring nights from its pair of senior leaders.

Post player Todd Nicholson paced the Panthers' offense with a season-high 16 points, while A.K. Williams finished with a double-double — 13 points and 10 rebounds — in the win.

Also contributing heavily were a pair of sophomore guards — Chris Arce and Koby Pacheco — who each recorded seven points for head coach Rick Onofre's squad.

Junior forwards Travis Delaney and Tate Johnson were the only other Panthers to find the basket, chipping in two points apiece.

But junior forward Cody Jandt proved that scoring isn't the only way to make an impact, pulling down a team-high 14 boards in the win.

Navarro will now prepare to compete in its home tournament, taking on St. Gerard at 10:30 a.m. today in the opening round.

Gateway beats Lifegate 82-68

SAN ANTONIO — After posting an energetic 65-42 win over Annapolis Christian Monday night, the Falcons may have run out of steam Tuesday, falling 82-68 to Gateway.

The Eagles raced out to a 27-10 advantage after one quarter of play and never allowed the Falcons back in the game, continuing their rapid scoring pace.

Lifegate (1-1) was led by junior Matt Akin, who finished with 17 points thanks to a solid night from the foul line. Akin went seven-of-eight from the charity stripe to lead his team in free throw shooting percentage.

Senior Austin Swick hit a team-high four three-pointers to finish with 12, while senior David McCulloch and freshman Tyler Swisher finished with nine points each.

Junior Dennis Ricketts added eight, with freshmen Cody Hines and Hunter Hewell and sophomore Peter Schaeffer all adding three.

Senior Joshua Muse and freshman Gabe Galvan each had two in the loss.

The Falcons will now try to regroup for Friday when they host Sunnybrook at 6 p.m.
