La Vernia runs past short-handed Bulldogs

MARION — The Marion Bulldogs (1-8, 0-4) lost to the La Vernia Bears (6-2, 3-1) 49-7 Friday night at Veterans Stadium.

The Bulldogs couldn’t get things together, being held to under 100 yards of total offense — with senior Hunter Brietzke recording two team-highs on 18 yards rushing and 30 yards receiving.

Derek Pierce, Nathayn DeHoyos, and Hunter Brietzke all stepped in at the quarterback position throughout the game, combining to go 8-27 passing for 69 yards.

The first score of the game came on a Josh Kubena 16-yard touchdown run with 7:49 to go in the firstst quarter. A.J. Ybarra added the extra point to put the Bears up 7-0 early in the game.

Several possessions and multiple penalties later, the Bears capitalized on an Ybarra 10-yard touchdown run with 8:45 to go in the second quarter. Ybarra also added the point after to put La Vernia up 14-0.

The final score of the half came with just over two minutes to go on a one-yard carry from quarterback Seth Grubb. Ybarra tacked on the extra point once again to put the Bears on top 21-0 going into halftime.

La Vernia came out on fire in the second half, as they held the Bulldogs to a quick three-and-out and then compiled a 10-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Kubena completed the drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 6:36 left in the third quarter. Ybarra’s extra point put the Bears ahead 28-0.

After another three-and-out on the Bulldogs’ following possession, Aaron Grubb returned the punt 57 yards for another Bear touchdown. Ybarra added the point after making the score 35-0 with 4:42 to go in the third quarter.

Yet another Bulldog punt led to a six-play, 88-yard drive capped off with a Rudy Paz 55-yard touchdown run. Ybarra then made the score 42-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Marion put its first and only points on the board with 6:14 to go in the game after DeHoyos recovered a La Vernia fumble on the two-yard line.

Derek Pierce scrambled in for two yards on the following play for the touchdown, and Austin Langemeier’s kick made the score 42-7.

The final score of the game came on a Josh Rutledge 44-yard touchdown reception from Rawstin Harris with four minutes left on the clock. The Ybarra kick left the final score at 49-7 in favor of the Bears.

La Vernia outgained Marion 482-45 in the contest, with 356 of those yards coming on the ground. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, looked to miss the mobility of injured quarterback Sean Hesler, rushing for a season-low minus-24 yards on 31 attempts.

The Bears lost four fumbles in the game, while the Bulldogs stayed turnover-free for the entire game.

DeHoyos was the team’s leading pass-catcher once again, making six grabs for 39 yards. Brietzke also had two receptions for 30 yards.

La Vernia;s Kubena paced the Bears with 161 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while Grubb rushed for 44 yards and three scores and threw for another 126 on 6-15 passing.

The Bulldogs will now face off against the Poteet Aggies on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Poteet to bring the season to a close.
