Local aiming to take on Cuellar

Published December 6, 2009

SEGUIN — Democrat U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo has drawn a potential general election opponent from Seguin.

Local resident Bryan Underwood, was one of several candidates to announce he was running for office Saturday at the Texas Liberty Caucus of Guadalupe County’s rally in Central Park.

The rally featured Graham County, Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack and Texas candidate for governor, Debra Medina.

The primary election is Tuesday, March 2. The general election in which Underwood will meet Cuellar if he becomes the Republican nominee is Nov. 2.

Underwood is a small business owner with concerns about the direction of the federal government who said in a news release announcing his candidacy that his love for his country and his conservative values have prompted him to challenge “tax and spend” incumbent, Henry Cuellar.

Cuellar opponents Charles Holloway and Daniel Chavez also spoke.

“It’s ‘Merry Christmas,’ not ‘Happy Holidays!’” Underwood told the crowd of 100 or who assembled in near-freezing weather in Seguin’s Central Park. “We should be able to say a prayer before a football game. We like guns, we own guns and we have a guaranteed right to own guns.”

As Americans, Underwood said, we bow to no one.

“So should our leaders!” he exclaimed. “If we’re not in a war, bring our brave young men and women home. If we are in a war, we need to pick up the biggest stick we can and leave them with the promise that if we have to come back, it’s going to be much worse. For these and many other reasons, I’m throwing my hat into the ring to be your next representative for District 28 of the great state of Texas.”

Underwood told the group that, unlike the incumbent, he is one of them, and he needed their support.

“This time next year, we need to see a moving truck pull up outside that office right there,” Underwood said of Cuellar’s district office across Austin Street from the courthouse.

Underwood said Cuellar’s votes in support of Cap and Trade and the House version of the government-run health care program define the incumbent’s philosophy that the government should become a “caretaker” of the governed through redistributing wealth and amassing control. Underwood believes the legislation to be unconstitutional.

“I believe the Constitution limits the power of the federal government in order to keep the American people free,” Underwood said. “The more government controls business and private property, the more the people’s freedom to live the ‘American Dream’ is limited. America is about opportunities, not guarantees. I believe that our Constitution and free enterprise system are what have made this country the greatest nation on earth. Assaults on either of these two fundamental pillars are assaults on America. If you believe in the American people, the America of our founders, our America, I would appreciate your vote in the Republican Primary on March 2nd.”

Underwood and his wife, Kelly, live in Seguin. They own Cutting Edge Carpentry.

He is on the board of directors and is an officer of the Seguin Arts Center. He has coached both Youth Soccer and Destination Imagination (through the Seguin ISD), and has been a 4-H Club Manager and a past Sports Booster Director. Underwood has been a member of the Builder’s Association and is an active member of The Country Church in Marion.
