Rainfall provides some reminders

Published September 13, 2009

You can forgive people for staring at the skies over the last few days.

After all, it’s been months since we’ve seen the kind of badly-needed rain.

It appears the bulk of the wet weather is now behind us — with the percentage steadily dropping for the rest of the week.

But during this brief respite from what has been a scorching drought, we got a reminder of just what the other side of Mother Nature’s coin can bring.

Some local streets were temporarily under water and crews had to put out a few barricades to keep drivers from trying to navigate flooded intersections.

The barricades shouldn’t be necessary as both state and local officials have used almost every opportunity to pound on the motto “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Time and time again drivers plowed through water — perhaps leaving a false sense of security for the next time the weather turns nasty.

“I can make it,” might be the thought that crosses their mind as they cross the flooded roadway — but it’s likely been one of the last thoughts that more than a few people have had.

The long-term forecasts offers us a chance for more rain in the weeks ahead. Enjoy it, but don’t become a statistic.
