Lady Matadors cruise past Navarro, 51-26

Published December 20, 2009

SEGUIN — After a close district loss to the No. 2 team in Class 4A on Tuesday, the Lady Matadors (14-8, 0-1) could’ve come into Friday’s game against Navarro still sulking a bit.

That didn’t happen.

Seguin pounded the Lady Panthers (8-9) inside early and often, rolling up a lead that grew to as big as 32 points before putting in its reserves for the final period.

“I thought our girls started well and kept it going throughout the game,” said Seguin head coach Kevin Lewis. “We’re trying to get our younger girls some confidence, and then when we put our starters back in, they kept the momentum going and that’s key.

“Everything’s a learning experience, so I was pleased with our effort tonight.”

Clearly overmatched against the Lady Matadors’ much larger starters, Navarro didn’t surrender, shutting out Seguin’s reserves in a fourth quarter that saw the Lady Panthers win 7-0.

“That zone they put up just made it hard to do anything and they killed us on the boards,” said Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth. “But I told our girls to just keep their heads up. We did some good things and we’re trying to add some new things in there and this was a good time to work on it.

“I saw some positives out of that.”

Seguin’s scoring avalanche began right from the opening tap, as senior post players Mona Martin and D’Shericka Davis got into the paint and finished strong, combining to score 12 of the Lady Matadors’ 18 first-quarter points.

The other six came from freshman point guard Destiny Martinez, who continues to show improvement.

“I thought (Destiny) did well tonight,” Lewis said. “She got us in our sets and didn’t turn the ball over during their presses. She’s slowly but surely coming along and she’s going to be a good player for us.”

Up 18-4 after one quarter of play, Seguin continued to get quality looks in the second period, stretching its lead to 34-16 by halftime.

The Lady Panthers, on the other hand, had easily their best offensive quarter just before the break, getting seven points from senior Burgandy Partain, three from Valerie Vrana and two from Amber Goebel.

Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Matadors didn’t rest with the big advantage, reestablishing control of the game with a 15-3 win in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 51-19 after Martinez found teammate Sabrina Rangel for a lay-up that just beat the third-quarter buzzer.

Seguin got six more from Martin and five from Tabatha Richardson in the period, but the defense was the bigger story, as the Lady Mats held Navarro without a successful field goal for the entire period.

But when Seguin’s starters left the court, the Lady Panthers showed their own defensive prowess, holding the Lady Mats without a single point in the final eight minutes — the first scoreless stanza Seguin has had all year.

“That’s a nice feeling to know that,” Harborth said. “I didn’t know that at the time. We played hard and competed and that’s what I’m proud of because Coach Lewis does a great job with his team there and they are a very good 4A ball club.”

Martin led Seguin with her 14 points in the game, while Richardson finished with a dozen for the Lady Matadors.

Davis and Martinez each added six, followed by five from LeeLee Logan and four apiece from Rangel and Randi Hawkins.

Partain and Vrana paced Navarro with nine and eight points, respectively, with Goebel, Diana Besa, Shelby Zamzow and Casey Braun each putting in two.

Erica Conover also added one in the Lady Panthers’ loss.

Navarro shot just 13 percent (6-48) from the field against Seguin, but the Lady Panthers did attempt three times as many free throws as the Lady Mats, connecting on 11 of their 21 shots.

Through the first three quarters, Seguin shot a torrid 49 percent (22-49) from the floor, although the 0-13 fourth quarter slump dropped their total to just 38 percent for the contest.

The Lady Matadors also went 4-7 at the charity stripe.

Following Friday night’s Guadalupe County showdown, Navarro will have over a week to rest and recuperate, hosting Falls City at 11 a.m. on Dec. 29. Meanwhile, Seguin has one more game before the Christmas break — a grudge match in Poth at 11 a.m. on Monday.

The two teams previously met in the title game of the Lady Matador Classic on Dec. 8, with Seguin winning 37-33.
