Gertrude Pape

On Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the age of 103, Gertrude Pape entered her eternal rest.

Born Mary Anita Gertrude Bolton in Seguin on Aug. 27, 1906, to Arthur Charles and Nina Wolf Bolton, she spent her early years in the community of Zuehl, attending the nearby Clemens School. After high school and college at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, she taught at the Goebel School in Zuehl for ten years. During the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Pape taught at St. Joseph’s School, now St. James. An accomplished pianist, she also gave music lessons in her home for many years.

For most of her life, she was an active member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Ann’s Circle. She was a steadfast member of the American Legion Auxiliary H. U. Wood Post No. 245. Gertrude always found time to meet with friends to make beautiful heirloom quilts.

Mrs. Pape was preceded in death by husband Alwin E. Pape Sr., her parents, brothers Robert and Marlin Bolton and her sister Marguerite; also her son, Alwin E. Pape Jr. and her grandson, Glenn Michael Pape. She is survived by her children, Arthur J. Pape of Strasbourg, France; Zara Dewhirst and husband Dudley of Knoxville, Tenn.; Alta Forshage and husband Eddie of McAllen, Texas; step-son, Robert Pape, M.D. of Seguin; daughter-in-law, Lilia G. Pape of Seguin; 10 grandchildren, Jon Erik Pape, Kristin Pape Ansorge, Bill Dewhirst, Hillary Dewhirst, Ellen Forshage Linbeck, Eddie Forshage, III, Joseph Forshage, Chris Forshage, Barry Pape and Sharon Pape; 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 at 9 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church followed by recitation of the rosary at 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Dennis Darilek officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the St. Ann’s Circle and the American Legion Auxiliary. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.treshewell.com .
