Marion ISD

Marion High School and Middle School parents — stop by the High School/Community Library during the month of April. On display, for your review, are a representative sample of textbooks, from what the teachers had to choose from for adoption.

After your review, we’d appreciate you completing a comment form. If you have any questions, please contact the campus principal.

Marion High School

We’ve been keeping you up-to-date on the track project at MISD. Here’s some more news. The Health Awareness Team of Marion High School and the high school chapter of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), sponsored by Dr. Kenney, want you to get fit!

They’ve created a walking program — called the O.T.H.E.R. Project from March 5 through May 18 and open to all ages at the new Cross Country Track at Marion High School.

“This track was made possible by a grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and through a partnership between the City of Marion and MISD,” Kenney writes.

In addition, many community and ISD folks have donated time, expertise and supplies to this endeavor. The brainchild of Dennis Dreyer and designed by Byron Nichols, the track provides a safe place for the Marion Cross Country Team to train and community members to exercise. Future plans include creating a native plant preserve, water feature and small amphitheater.”

Want to join the walking group? Pick up a registration pack at all MISD campus offices, the Community Library or at www.marion.txed.net.

The registration fees are $10 for adults, $7 for MS/HS students and $5 for elementary students and senior citizens (65 & up). There is a Community Walk scheduled for April 14 from 8am to 11am and a Closing Ceremony on May 18 @ 6pm. All distances will be logged and prizes will be awarded. All proceeds will benefit the Marion HOSA chapter. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Kenney @ 830-914-2803, x 373 or HYPERLINK “mailto:ckenney(at)marion.txed.net” ckenney(at)marion.txed.net.

Middle School

Jim Reily shares, “Our science fair participants have once again represented Marion Middle School exceptionally. Every one of our participants received some form of award and all participants received scholarships for $8,000 from the University of the Incarnate Word. Blaze Boren, Amber Ikels and Tyler O’Bryan each received Honorable Mention for their projects. Bret Brown and the team of Wyatt Kunde and Hayden Schwenn were awarded the Director’s Award for the high quality of their projects. The team of Matthew Bornmann and John Muehl earned 4th Place in the Life Science Subfair for their project. CG Cruz earned 4th Place in the Engineering category for his project. The team of Dylan Goudge and Drew Johnson were awarded 3rd Place in the Health Science Subfair for their project and they will go on to represent Marion at the state Science Fair April 5-7.”

Elementary

Karrer Campus 4th graders recently visited San Antonio. “While visiting the Alamo, students observed and explored various parts of the grounds,” Melissa Helfer sends in. “Some groups completed scavenger hunts, while others held group discussions for future writing projects. After the journey through the Alamo grounds, the students were treated to a modern-day performance of “The Legend of the Bluebonnet” at the Magik Theatre. Students participated in an interactive version of the legend along with other Texas history stories. The trip ended with lunch at Niemitz Park in Cibolo. The students remained active participants throughout the entire day. Everyone attending enjoyed a wonderful trip with beautiful weather. Special thanks to our Texas State Interns who accompanied us on the field trip!”

Now for some bragging on one of our 5th graders, Melody Wiley and the Karrer Campus. Melody came up with an idea for a recycling contest at the Karrer Campus and here are the results that she reported to the students and staff, “We as a school recycled 5.5 tons of paper during the 5-week contest. That amount of recycled paper will save 94 trees, 330 pounds of air pollution, 22,000-kilowattt hours of electricity and 38,500 gallons of water.” Ms. Russell’s class earned 1st place with 2,730 pounds of recycling. Awesome job Melody & the Karrer Campus!

Community Library

Congrats to Stephen Cage! Stephen was named to the Provost’s List at Texas Lutheran University for the Fall 2006 semester. The Provost List honors those students who earned the maximum 4.0 grade point average with a minimum of 12 graded hours in the past semester. Last year Stephen was awarded the Community Library’s Scholarship – we are so very proud of his accomplishments at TLU!

St. John’s Daycare and Marion Headstart were treated to a lesson in dental health. Sherry Jenkins from the Methodist Health Care Clinic explained the importance of brushing, flossing and going to the dentist. Ms. Jenkins allowed the children to try on her “doctor jacket”, mask and gloves. She also showed the children some of the tools used during a dental check-up. Each child received a goodie bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and a special sticker. A special thanks goes out to Ms. Sherry and the Methodist Health Care Clinic for their support of our weekly Storytime.
