Historic Weinert House showcased on tour

Published December 3, 2009

Editor’s Note: This is part three in a three-part series about the Heritage Home Tour.

SEGUIN — For those in search of a little history, the Weinert House and the Heritage Museum are packed with secrets of Seguin’s past.

The Weinert House

The Weinert House has been a landmark on North Austin Street for more than a century, and on Dec. 5-6 visitors can view the historic home.

The F.C. Weinert House was built in 1895 in the popular Victorian style. The original owner was Ferdinand Carl Weinert, who held the offices of state representative, state senator, and secretary of state between 1892 and 1934.

Today the 4,000-square-foot home is owned by Mike Heckmann.

“I really like the location and the history of the home,” Heckmann said.

Heckmann plans on opening the house as a bed and breakfast beginning Dec. 18. The home has four bedrooms and can accommodate 12 to 16 guests. Heckmann said the home can also be used as an event facility.

“The part that really appeals to me is the open design of the home, and the landscaping,” Heckmann said. “There can be parties of up to 54 inside on the lower level, and up to 500 outside.”

The entire home will be on the tour, including the Nolte Room, Erskine Room, Starcke Room, Lovett Suite, the Woods Porch and the Betty Ann Matthies Conference Room.

The house features a parlor with beautiful fretwork over the entrance, a music room, windowed porch, dining room, six fireplaces and four beautifully appointed guest rooms. Features including an antique baby grand piano, Persian rugs and dormers, gables and a balustrade porch work together to give character to the house.

Heritage Museum

History has a home at the Seguin Heritage Museum, and it will be a stop on this year’s Seguin Conservation Society’s annual home tour.

While it isn’t a home in the literal sense, the Heritage Museum has a lot to teach about Guadalupe County. Heritage Museum Director John Gessick said he was happy to participate in the home tour this year.

“We’re proud to be considered to be a part of the Conservation Society’s parade of homes,” John said. “The museum is an extension of the history and culture of the homes, and of Guadalupe County.”

The Heritage Museum is housed in the former Red and White Grocery Store. Henry Troell constructed the red brick building in 1898.

For those who can’t wait until the weekend, the museum will host its annual open house during tonight’s Holiday Stroll Parade from 6-8 p.m.

The Heritage Museum will display many artifacts from around Guadalupe County and will have a special Christmas display, John said.

“This year’s theme is Christmas under the six flags of Texas,” John said. “We have trees representing each of the six flags that flew over Texas. Each tree will be decorated in the old traditional style of the country it is representing.”

The home tour is presented by the Seguin Conservation Society. Visitors can view all the houses on Dec. 5-6 from 2-5 p.m.

Tickets for the tour are $8 in advance and can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers, Cascades, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and First Commercial Bank. On the day of the Tour, tickets and maps are available at each home for $10. Homes can be visited in any order.

Refreshments will be served at the First Church at 213 E. Live Oak St. in the Seguin Conservation Society Heritage Village. The other Seguin Conservation Society properties in the Heritage Village will also be open during the Heritage Home Tour.
