GM leader to speak at TLU

Published November 5, 2009

SEGUIN — On Nov. 10, TLU will open its doors to a leader in the global auto industry and the community for a lecture on today’s economy.

Former CEO of AT&T and current chairman of General Motors Company, Ed Whitacre, will take the stage at for his first public address in Texas since taking up his role at GM.

TLU President Ann Svennungsen said the event is sure to give listeners a lot of insight into the auto industry today.

“We’re thrilled he is coming to speak,” Svennungsen said. “His experiences can really bring wisdom and insight to our students and community.”

Whitacre graduated from Texas Tech University and joined the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1963 as a facility engineer. After working his way up the corporate ladder, he was appointed president and chief operating officer in 1988. Two years later, he became CEO and chairman of the board.

After leaving AT&T, he came to TLU to teach. He served as executive professor of business-in-residence until he joined GM.

“My decision to join GM is a public service — a chance for me to give more back,” Whitacre said. “That’s also why I chose to teach at Texas Lutheran University. In addition to fine academics, they teach their graduates to give back to society.”

Svennungsen said that Whitacre is an exceptional speaker and the audience will have a lot to take away from the event.

“We have seen unprecedented changes to the U.S. and world economy in the last two years,” Svennungsen said. “I am thrilled that our students and the public can hear first-hand about the dramatic restructuring of the auto industry and our economy from one of corporate America’s leading lights.”

This will be the third speech Whitacre has given at TLU.

The speech will be given in Jackson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. The audience will have the opportunity for a question and answer session with Whitacre at the end of his presentation.

The event is free, and open to anyone who wishes to attend. Whitacre’s address at TLU will also be carried live on the Internet via video stream at www.tlu.edu/whitacre .
