Marion girls brush aside Poteet, 75-37
Published January 24, 2010
MARION — The Lady Bulldogs (20-4, 7-1) wrapped up a season sweep of Poteet on Friday night, crushing the Agates 75-37.
Marion dominated in every facet of the game, using a fierce full-court press and another impressive defensive effort from sophomore Rachel Farris to harass Poteet (6-17, 1-7) all night long.
“(Poteet’s) so physical and aggressive that if you overlook them, they can come at you pretty hard,” said Marion head coach Kollyn McWhinney. “I was really happy with our press tonight — that was the best we’ve run it lately.
“We were really focused tonight on running the floor and scoring in transition and I think that showed with the 75 points.”
The Lady Bulldogs played so well that two players — Farris and Reyna Noriega — each finished just shy of recording triple-doubles, despite playing limited minutes in the second half due to the lopsided score.
It would’ve been the second triple-double in the span of a week for Farris, who put up 13 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks in the Lady Bulldogs’ 54-34 win over La Vernia on Jan. 15.
Against Poteet, Farris added nine more blocked shots, eight rebounds and seven points — a performance that McWhinney sees as just another sign of how good Farris can become in the final two-plus years that she has left at Marion.
“She’s done an awesome job,” the coach said. “She blocks out well, rebounds well and she’s played very, very strong defensively and I’m happy to say that her offense has started to come along and is starting to catch up to her defense.
“When that happens, she’s probably going to be pretty unstoppable.”
Noriega, the senior leader of the club, showed that she’s already got all the tools to be a prolific scorer, delivering 13 points — nine of which came in the opening period. That was good for half of the Lady Bulldogs’ first-quarter total of 18, as Marion watched Poteet score the first three points of the ballgame before ending the stanza on an 18-5 run.
The Lady Bulldogs got their press working early, with Kyana Fennell posting back-to-back steals and capping each play with assists to a wide-open Ashley Jacobsen.
That press continued to befuddle the Agates in the second quarter, as Marion put the game well out of reach with a series of six consecutive steals that helped balloon the Bulldogs’ lead to 41-11.
Senior Maegan Hartman was the beneficiary of several of those turnovers, scoring 10 points in the period — all coming off of steals.
Marion’s 28-point outburst in the second quarter made the score 46-13 at the half and effectively removed all drama from the rest of the game.
From that point on, McWhinney shuffled in reserves and different lineups, as the Lady Bulldogs posted another district victory in blowout fashion.
The coach knows, however, that her team has a much tougher week ahead of them, scheduled to face a pair of opponents that made things tough in the first go-around.
“Next week we’ve got a big game with Somerset, who beat us in the second round (of district play) last year, so we have that to target,” McWhinney said. “And in Luling, we only won by four and they actually had a 15-point lead on us in the first half — we didn’t show up.
“I have things that we’re going to target in each game other than just saying, ‘Just play your game.’ We feel like we get everybody’s best shot every game, so we have to make sure we give our best effort every game too.”
And another effort like the one that Noriega gave Friday night certainly wouldn’t hurt the Lady Bulldogs’ chances, as the senior guard added nine steals and eight assists to go along with her 13 points.
Fennell finished with a dozen points in Marion’s big win, also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Jacobsen and Hartman scored 11 and 10, respectively, with the senior tandem also combining for seven boards and five assists.
Besides Farris, two other players — Hailey Speer and Deidra Reasor — put in seven points, with Speer adding five rebounds and Reasor also tallying seven assists, five steals and four boards.
The Lady Bulldogs’ game against Somserset is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Marion, while Friday’s game versus Luling will be a road contest, also set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
Marion defeated Somerset 67-53 on Dec, 22 and edged the Lady Eagles 54-50 back on Jan. 5.
