SEGUIN — The Matador boys used a balanced scoring attack to bury Lockhart Friday night, winning 78-46.
Seguin (1-1) saw a whopping nine players score six points or more, led by Jordan Leal’s 13. Behind him were Jason Even (10) and Brig Gerlich (nine), followed by Andrew Flores and Rodney Durst, who put in eight and seven, respectively.
Jonathan Gonzales scored seven as well, with Phillip Gonzales, Kevin McClure and Ryan Tovar each adding three apiece.
The Matadors’ next game is on Monday, as they face Akins in an 8 p.m. contest on the road.
Lady Mats play in SA
SAN ANTONIO — The Seguin girls (4-4) finished their run at the Southwest Tournament Saturday, posting a 2-3 record while competing there.
The Lady Matadors dropped back-to-back games Saturday, losing to Clemens by 15 and host Southwest by 12. Senior Monnarae Martin was named to the All-Tournament Team for her solid play over the weekend.
On Friday, Seguin split its pair of games, falling 78-31 to O’Connor before walloping Boerne Geneva 71-27.
LeeLee Logan paced her team against O’Connor, scoring 12, with Tabatha Richardson adding eight and Victoria Avalos chipping in five.
In the win over Geneva, Martin and Liz Young had 12 each, while Richardson added 11 and Sabrina Rangel contributed nine.
Emma Martinez scored eight in the blowout victory.
The tournament began Thursday with the Lady Matadors defeating McCollum 60-49 thanks to the trio of Martin (23), Richardson (13) and Logan (10).
Seguin’s next game will be at Southside High School Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Bulldogs win thriller
SEGUIN — Isaac Williams tipped in his own miss at the buzzer to lift the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs (1-0) to a 70-68 season-opening win over Southwestern College (Kan.) Moundbuilders Thursday evening at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
Williams took a shot on the post with two seconds to play and tapped the rebound to the rim. The ball bounced off the back of the rim and then fell through as time expired.
Williams, a sophomore from San Antonio, finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Late in the second half, the team traded leads. Justin Diggles made a driving lay-up with 2:37 to play to put the Moundbuilders up two, 66-64.
Southwestern’s James Davis made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 68 with 32 seconds to play.
After shooting only 30 percent in the first half, TLU made 42 percent of its shots in the second half. Southwestern also shot better in the second half, improving from 30 percent to 45 percent.
Howard added 12 points, three rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs. David Price, a senior transfer from San Antonio, delivered eight points and seven rebounds.
