Foot chase ends with ride to jail

Published January 30, 2009

SEGUIN — Police say that Robert Flores flagged down the wrong truck on Wednesday night.

According to Seguin police, 28-year-old Flores was fleeing the scene of a vehicle burglary with the owner’s son in pursuit when he flagged down a truck driven by an off-duty San Marcos police officer.

Seguin Police Detective Sgt. Jerry Hernandez said it was likely that Flores believed the truck was driven by a friend.

“I guess he thought it was his ride,” Hernandez said.

“The officer recognized Flores and called our dispatch — he used to work for Seguin PD — and said he saw Robert Flores holding something and trying to flag him down. By that point the victim was also calling police.”

The pursuit began at 7:16 p.m. in the 900 block of East Weinert Street. A man pulled up to his father’s house and reported seeing Flores rummaging in one of his fathers’ vehicles.

“At first he thought it was his dad and called out to him and then when he realized that it wasn’t, he did what we’d all probably do, asked ‘What are you doing?’” Hernandez said. “The suspect fled on foot and the witness followed, calling police on his cell phone.”

Hernandez said it is believed that Flores entered two unlocked cars in the driveway — a ’95 Chevy Camaro and ’95 Pontiac Grand Am — and stole a Sony stereo from one of the vehicles. He reportedly ran from the scene with the stereo wrapped in his jacket.

Once spotted by the off-duty officer, Danny Castillo, Flores continued to flee, followed by Castillo, Seguin police and the victim’s son.

He was quickly apprehended and arrested as he reportedly tried to hide among houses. The stereo and an insurance card from the vehicle were recovered and Hernandez said burglary tools were found in Flores’ possession.

“Officer Castillo did a great job and definitely deserves kudos,” Hernandez said.

Flores was taken to Guadalupe County Jail charged with a parole violation, two counts of burglary of a vehicle with a previous conviction and unlawful use of a criminal instrument.

Hernandez said that Flores is well-known by officers in the Seguin area.

“I could comfortably say he has a history with us,” Hernandez said.
