Time to get 'nutty' for Seguin festival

Published October 22, 2009

Is it time for Seguin’s senior citizens to go nuts? You bet it is!

Hold on to your hats this coming weekend during Seguin’s Pecan Fest Heritage Days spectacular event-filled weekend, Oct. 23-25.

In fact, why don’t you gather up a couple of those Hoity Toity hats out of the attic and get in step during the Hats Off To Juan Seguin Parade at Central Park on Saturday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. I just know that there’s a hat or two from way back yesteryear, maybe it was grandma’s or grandpa’s, that is just hanker’n for an opportunity to be dusted off, dolled up and worn again.

And, at about that same time you can kick back for a spell and enjoy the Urban 15 Dance and Drum Group. If you’re a night-owl, you can kick your boots off and enjoy a street dance with Grupo Vida/Electric Cowboys to get you into that midnight rodeo mood of not too many years ago. Dance music will be provided by Eppes Brothers.

While you’re planning for that BIG Saturday night, you can still get in lots of other activities on Friday.

During the day, why not stop by Pape’s Nutcracker Museum for a fascinating, and nutty, tour. Sebastopol State Historic Site will be open for special tours in celebration of our Pecan Fest Heritage Days. Of course, you can’t miss a stop at the fantastic Heritage Museum where they are presenting their Archaeology Month exhibit and their Film Festival Photography Show. And, the Pumpkin Patch on Austin Street will be up and running.

The Pecan Classic Golf Tournament kicks off around 1 p.m. and the 5th Annual Seguin Film & Arts Festival showing at the Palace Theater starts around 11 p.m. Now that’s a full Friday.

But, wait — it wouldn’t be a Seguin celebration without our very own “The Harleys” rock’n the house during the Texas Theater Fundraiser Dance starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.

If you thought Friday was packed full of fun and exciting things to do in Seguin, a Pecan Fest Heritage Days festival that was just “made” for senior citizens to enjoy, wait until you wake up to Saturday.

The Tour de Pecan Bike Ride sets the pace for the day beginning at 7:30 a.m. You can also enjoy the Tri County Tractor Pull that will be going on “all day.” Farmers are use to working all day.

Now here’s a knock-out Saturday for you. Seguin’s Trade Days will be going on (look at all the Christmas shopping you can get done!) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the downtown area together with Joe Comingore’s Downtown Seguin Walking Tour. Also on Saturday, the Heritage Village Tours and Bake Sale will take place, there will be a Volksmarch and a Col. Juan Seguin birth date recognition, and the Wilson Pottery Show will be available along with many of the tours mentioned above for Friday.

For those senior citizen and other art enthusiasts, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. there will be a fabulous Art Galleries Tour. The tour will include seven art gallery stops. The Helen Stein Studio, the Pat Carroll Schultz Studio, Kitty Keller Designs, Mosheim Mansion, MJC Gallery, the Roger Betschler Studio and Gallery Marika.

If you’ve wondered where some of the beautiful sculptures at the hospital and elsewhere have come from, you might be surprised to know that sculptor Marika Bordes has her working studio at 308 Erkel Ave. adjacent Veterans Park. She’s part of this great Art Gallery Tour.

Here’s a Web site providing details about the Art Gallery Tour: http://www.mosheimmansion.com/pecanfest.htm .

Need a brief rest on Saturday? Take time out at the Palace Theater to view the 5th Annual Seguin Film & Arts Festival short films screening. The screening of the winning short film will be at 5 p.m.

Hungry? Need I say more? Well, there’s no need to stay hungry during this year’s Pecan Fest Heritage Days. On Saturday, enjoy a turkey and dressing lunch, participate in the sales of Pecan Bake Show Contest entries (no calories there), or just hunker down with the steak of your choice at the Guadalupe Valley Championship Steak Cook-off Dinner starting at 5:30 p.m.

As Saturday night ends with a great street dance, seniors can wake up Sunday morning for more excitement at the Tri County Tractor Pull — after going to church, of course!

Many of the tours already mentioned will also be open for a few hours on Sunday—starting at around 11 a.m.

You can even get another turkey and dressing lunch if you missed out on Saturday.

Rural Heritage Days will continue as will the Film and Arts Festival. At 3 p.m. there will be a Chisholm Trail Tribute. And, from 3-5 p.m., the Mosheim Mansion will present its “Monologues & Merlot.” You’ll have no problem bumping into many other senior citizen and other friends and family during the three-day Pecan Fest Heritage Days celebration.

One group you won’t see on Sunday afternoon is Seguin Art Center’s cast and crew who are rehearsing for the Neil Simon Play “Plaza Suite” directed by local Pat Hoppe. The Art Center’s dinner-theater production will begin in mid-November. Watch for details on this “other” great event taking place in our River City.

So, seniors and others, there’s absolutely no need to be bored this coming weekend in Seguin. Put on that Hoity Toity Hat and … well … go nuts!
